I believe I have eveything released the "proper" way, but I am longing for the things on youtube but in better quality.
So where does a novice collector find bootleg dvd and audio in good reliable formats and without getting scammed? Also, is there a master list of unreleased items?

Hello there,
I know what you mean and the beginnings is somehow the worst part in that sense but the funnier on the other hand.

I am 25 now and I started collecting at the age of 16... 9 years now, whoawh!!!

I started googling "Brian Setzer bootlegs" or "Brian Setzer trade" - there are many websites dedicated to trading live recordings, some people might be kind enough to do what it's called B&P or something like that: you send the CDs and pay the postage and they do copies of some live shows...

Another option is Ebay, Gemm.com or Musicstack.com - you can find some stuff from time to time....

Or my final idea up to here is to visit this blog: www.straycatsrarities.blogspot.com, from which you can download quite a lot of live shows by the BSO, Stray Cats, etc for free. Also, try to do some trades with people from here.

If I can help you with something in particular, do not hesitate to PM me or to visit my blog www.straycatscollectors.blogspot.com to see what's available on the market concerning bootlegs, rare editions, etc. I am thinking of posting a list (in a few days/weeks) of the best live recordings, you know, like a MUST.

Hope this little tip helps you someway!
Jon

Hey,
happy to hear that!

Some of the links are no longer working I think, and since it's Rapidshare you can only download a show or link every 15min ;-)

Should you guys 'visibly' be talking about bootlegs? I'm not really sure how this is fair to Brian, The Cats and The BSO (or any other artist for that matter).

Not flaming, just saying.

I was unsure of the rules here. I thought I made it obvious I had purchased everything he has released. Other than sending him a personal check I don't know what more I can do to support this artist. On the other hand, if someone was a fan of a band that I had HD recordings of from TV that were never released or something similar, I would certainly make that available to a fan on a trade or not for profit basis. Part of the trade off is the lower quality release. On the flipside, there are plenty of people actually openly selling those items for cash online. I feel there is a distinct difference, but that's my moral compass.

Check out U2 on YouTube - things have reached a whole new level. People are gathering 10-20 different camera angles from certain shows and editing them together at great length to produce a homemade concert film. You have to be a real fan to devote that kind of gathering and editing time into something. On a tangent of that subject, I am for a fan recording a show for posterity in anyway they can. I recently saw Chris Isaak at a casino outside Chicago from the balcony that cost me about $80+ for two tickets. While that is not much for a live show these days it's really a lot when you think that I saw Paul McCartney 15 years ago at a major auditorium for $35 a ticket. It really angers me that 20-30% of that ticket cost is add on fees from ticketsheister and other BS fees. I am rambling now. Logging out.

I don't see anything wrong talking about bootlegs... I mean, we all know those recordings exist, the artist know that they are bootlegged quite frequently... so, what's wrong??

Some people trade them, some people sell them... well, the bootlegs are already there and that's not going to stop.

We all here support our favourite artist in any way we can. Some go to concerts, others buy the albums, others download the music for free but attend gigs... so, there's nothing wrong with it.

I am sure that many of us want to have a copy of the shows we've been to...

Do you have the Stray Cats show in Melbourne 2009??? If you have it and want to support your artist, throw it away ;-)

And now, speaking as a fan Pony, I don't know if it's fair that Brian has released a Christmas live album, which is already included in the DVD Christmas Extravaganza, don't know if it's fair that after releasing that DVD, 2 years later he releases the same DVD with the Xmas compilation, when Boogie Woogie Xmas was released in 2002, then it was re-released in 2003 with different bonus tracks for different stores, then re-re-released in 2004 with more extra tracks.... Don't know if it's fair The Ultimate Collection 2CD set with the show in Japan that had previously been released as Jumpin East Of Java... don't know if it's fair to released CDs for the Japanese market only....

And then it's us who have to support the artist by buying the albums and not speaking about bootlegs??? About trading bootlegs???

Pony, don't take me wrong. It's nothing with you, honestly... but sometimes the comments concerning bootlegs, supporting artists and all that... the artists (in general, not only in this case, though I am mainly dealing with Brian) should take the point of view of the fans, from time to time...

It might be a good thing to be having a dialog here about bootlegs. Brian and Co are apparently releasing live recordings from the vaults and it might help their decision process to understand what the fans want. I say more dvds please! :-)

Twenty Flight, I agree. IF the company realizes there is demand then smart common business will provide a supply. I think more DVD's for sure, because a great CD is Great, but a great Concert can be really awesome and captured on film. Since the BSO, Brian and the Cats are all showboating awesome players..... I say...> DVD's............. you hearing me Surfdog.....>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with most of Jon's points. Bootlegged vs. pirated music is the key to the argument for me.

Bootlegs of material record companies would never even think of releasing are just fine by me, and fun to collect. Pirated music, that is, copies of official in-print releases that do cut into the profits of the artist are where the real issue is for me.

There are times where Brian has said he's not opposed to fan recording, as long as people aren't selling the recordings. And there are times where he has said he doesn't like them, partly because he feels the quality of most of these recordings is very poor, and feels fans are being exploited and ripped off, paying $25, $50, and up for a 1 or 2-disc audience recording. I would think most artists would like to have some control over the quality of their work that gets released, officially or otherwise. Unfortunately, once they're out there, someone will find a way to make money off of it. And so, the party line is to be opposed to all of it. I understand that point of view, but I still want to hear as much of this as I can. That rarely-performed song in the trio set, that venue-specific banter, those occasional variations to the solos that crop up once in a while... I love it all.

How many of you have purchased every single Setzer release brand-new from a retail outlet that received their merchandise from an official distribution outlet? How many of you have arrived late to the party (possibly because you're under the age of 40), or maybe discovered Brian's solo stuff before getting into Stray Cats, and had to resort to buying used copies of official releases? True, you are supporting the retailer or eBay seller who sold you the album, but the revenue from the first time it had been purchased by the retailer and sold had already gone to the artist. Nothing from that used sale did. You have purchased an official release, but is it any different from buying a bootleg?

While I have stumbled into advance copies of albums on occasion (one given to me by The Brian himself, with the proviso "Now I don't want to see this on eBay next week!"), it has never stopped me from buying the US copy, the Japan edition, the vinyl edition, downloads, and any available deluxe editions of each release. Lonely Avenue must have set me back more than $200 with the downloadable singles, vinyl, picture disc, US CD, Japan CD, and Deluxe vinyl editions. I would never think of just being happy with the advance release, promo copy, or CD-R. I think that's where, on a non-record-company-sponsored fan forum, it's perfectly acceptable to discuss these things. I didn't use to think this way, and often made posts similar to the point Pony made in this thread. I thought it was disrespectful to the artist, and somehow affected Brian's income. But I would like to believe most of the fans here wouldn't turn away a rare Setzer recording if it arrived in their mailbox, and would still do what they could to support Brian's recording career, not only by buying the music, but by purchasing concert tickets, signature model guitars, and other merchandise. And if that doesn't help you sleep any better, consider the meet-n-greeds, er, greets. There are plenty of revenue streams for Brian that the bootlegs can't even touch.

As for the argument that Christmas Comes Alive is a redunancy because of the Christmas Extravaganza DVD, I have to disagree there. I don't always have time to stop and watch the DVD, and most fans and casual listeners wouldn't spend the time or even know how to rip the audio from the DVD. And while it's been established that at least one of the tracks from Christmas Comes Alive came from that DVD, for the most part, it is a new show, and I am glad I bought it.

I will also be buying the DVD and audio-only download for "It's Gonna Rock, 'Cause That's What I Do!" coming up on October 25th, despite having captured the audio and video from the webcast several months back. Like the previous Montreal DVD, which had been widely bootlegged for more than a decade before the official release, the video and audio quality will be an upgrade worth owning.

I've always been up for these DVDs:

Live In Japan 1999
Las Vegas 1997
and a DVD with Brian's video clips: Solo, BSO, 68 CBS and the guest appearance with Jimmy Barnes!!

Yeah, there should definitely be an official DVD with all the Setzer solo (and Orchestra) stuff. They did it for the Stray Cats, so why not...?

Hey Gretscholic,
as far as I know, Brian intended to do something like what we're saying but I think it takes a while to get all the copyright/publishing rights for those clips, since many companies are involved: EMI, Mushroom, Hollywood, Interscope, Disney... But on the other hand, when there's a will, there's a way!

Just as mere information, and if my memory doesn't betray me, these are the clips:

1986
The Knife Feels Like Justice
Boulevard Of Broken Dreams

1988
Rebelene
When The Sky Comes Tumblin' Down

1990
Little Darling (with Jimmy Barnes)

1991
Budweiser (TV advert, wouldn't it be cool??)

1994
Lady Luck

1996
Jingle Bells

1998
Jump, Jive An' Wail

1999
If You Can't Rock Me

2000
In The Mood

2001
I'm Only In It For The Honey

2002
Sexy Sexy

2003
Luck Be A Lady

2006
Back Streets Of Tokyo (with Hotei)

And another suggestion for a possible DVD:
What about having most of Brian Setzer TV performances?
You know, Radiation Ranch from Letterman 1986, or Rebelene (from Letterman), Ignition (from Jay Leno), and well, some others like Hoodoo Voodoo Doll, Brand New Cadillac, Rumble In Brighton... from different TV shows. I wouldn't say all the times he played Jump Jive An Wail all over the world, but one or two would be cool, so as In The Mood, or Sexy Sexy in Japan... that would be amazing!!!

And the same for the Stray Cats ;-) Rockhouse!!!

Hey Brett,
yes it is an official clip. It used to be on YouTube, but it's no longer available. I have a DVD with it, a friend from Japan taped it for me from MTV.

In the meantime, enjoy this one:

I remember BrianSetzer.com posting a few shots from the filming back in July 2006.

My friend works in the industry and gave me a cd that i believe is uncirculated. Apparentl durring the dirty Boogie sessions the band actually recorded over 20 songs. i have 9 of these on disc. here is the track listing;

1. All night rock
2. Boozer blues
3. Hot rod heist
4 .Around the world with you
5. Gloria (early different version)
6. Got to get you into my life (beatles cover)
7. your sixteen (johnny burnett cover)
8. highway time
9. You don't stand a chance

Tis same friend also claims (although I have never heard it), but their is a 1993 or 94 stray cats version of the song If you caan't rock me from Vavoom. So I guess that song is a bit older.
