Twang Baby Twang!
completely different circuit.. The older models used
Class A discreet components and thus transistors where used in the
preamp sections. They didnt have a lot of headroom or "hi-fi" ness to
them..
The 301 is still class A but it replaced the transistors with
Op-amp IC chips (think JRC4558).. this gave the RE301 much
more headroom and dynamic clarity with a powerful preamp that didnt
clips so quickly and fart out.
the 301 also has Bass and Treble in the tape delay recovery section that
adds a little better echo response BUT
you must know that the secret to brians space echo mojo is the
pre-amp of the 301, not the tape delay...
do a search on the Nocturn pedal I am trying to create and you can read all the technical nonsense within that thread.
Tape delays are a bitch to work with all the time and currently the only one doing it right and dependably is Fulltone with the TTE (echoplex EP-1 model that setzer uses on most all his recordings in the studio, save for the dirty boogie album that got the 301 treatment)
