Well, I guess it is just the delay is set to a longer slapback time. Just have a look at the "Guitar Of Brian Setzer" HotLicks DVD/Video. Evon on the "Rumble in Brixton" Brian just turns the knob on his Roland Echo and thatīs it...

It's a longer delay time, like what Wrock mentioned. If ye go by the Roland RE-301 or the Boss RE-20, you would change the echo mode setting from mode 1 to mode 3 for Sleepwalk. He changes the same knob on the 301.

Hope that helps ye out.

if you are talking about his sound here:

then all he does different is turn up the input gain a bit on the RE-301's pre-amp as well as switch over to setting number 2 to increase the slapback repeats (on a pedal thats just increasing the feedback)

I've got an old copy of Nikko's setzer sound page with all that crap on it..
gotta find it and post it..

I've seen a video of that a few times, and that is a great sound, and a great song too. It reminds me of being a kid for some reason

Had to head down below decks to find my copy, but here it be:

I don't remember if this part on the echo was from Nikko's page or from a guitar magazine:

Roland Chorus Echo (RE-301)

(all settings assume the first line is "0", straight up is "5"
- direct sig. - ON
- input #3 (input #1 for stereo applications)
- volume - 4 to 4.5
- level -35dB
- chorus off
- intensity (not used)
- echo - ON
- mode 1 (3 for Sleepwalk)
- volume - 3 to 3.5
- repeat rate - 2
- intensity - 2
- switch on ECHO (not single delay)
- reverb - 0 (not used)
- bass tone - 5
- treble tone - 5
- output level -25dB

The amplifier settings and comments listed below were from Nikko's page:

Brian Setzer Amplifier Settings-Components

1963 Bassman - 50 watts
- blonde Tolex with wheat grille cover
- 6G6-B unmodified circuit with solid-state rectifier (less sag than tube rectifiers)
- preamp tubes - NOS Chinese 12AX7
- output tubes - NOS Philips 6L6WGB or NOS Tung Sol 5881
- cabinet - 2 x 12" Celestion V30, 8 ohm, 30 watt speakers wired in parallel (4 ohm total cabinet load)
with 12 gauge wiring
Settings
- normal input
- volume 4 (up to 5 for heavier overdrive)
- treble 10
- bass 4
- presence 10

From TVtheWiredTurtle - "Brian is using either the Phillips NOS 6L6WGBs or Tung Sol NOS 5881s, the amp is almost 10 watts less efficient hence the earlier breakup of the power section coupled by the "gainier" Chinese tubes that carry a bigger voltage than most NOS tubes and many Soviet reissues. It's running cloer to 40 watts." and "The nature of the EQ in the normal channel is such that when the treble is dimed, the bass is slightly attenuated which cuts down on the speakers farting out in the lows - although the V30s don't dive up the ghost very easily."

LONG Guitar cable lead (no wireless)

Setzer uses long guitar leads for room on the stage, but it also has the effect of eliminating the super high frequencies that can get "ice-picky." From TV again " He uses such long instrument cables, the capacitance loading smooths out the high end harshness that would otherwise be killing the crowd when using mere mortal cables like we all use (10'-18')"

Putting it all together
The trick to the amp sound is to set it just to the point of breakup. With a Gretsch, that happens at 4 to 4.5. At that setting, you can back the volume of the guitar off to clean up the sound or dig in with the pick to get a more distorted sound. The heart of Setzer's sound is overdriven tubes. Pedals will not get you the same sound.
Treble is the name of the game. Full treble, full presence. The bass is rolled off mainly because of the sealed cabinet. Sealing the cabinet tightens up the bass response and too much bass will muddy up the sound. There's plenty of bass in the cabinet without adding more.
The only real modification to the cabinet is replacement of the speaker wires. Heavy gauge (12 gauge?) is used to bring more, unrestricted signal to the speakers. Really an important part of the sound. The speakers are Celestion V30s. That seems to be a widely popular choice for a rock sound. Nice breakup.
Live, Setzer always uses the Bassman, but in the studio, anything's game. Supros, blonde Showmans, Gretsch Cowboy amps, Princeton, etc... It's impossible to know what's what on his albums ampwise, but the basic sound is the same.

TV,

Unfortunately, I didn't save the rest of the page (images, etc.). I just kept most of the Transcriptions and that page on the amp./echo settings.

I do however, have this image which was on the page, although it originally was printed in a guitar mag.

Here is the link to view/download it if you wish.

Yeah, I just re-edited it. I think it works now.

By the way, thanks so much for sharing the Stray Cats Tribute Guitar Video. I really enjoyed seeing that. I especially liked the parts about walking into court and the guy returning the guitar for a plea bargain, the zero fret and monopoly dice tricks that he did to help get the guitar to stay in tune and all the other stuff.

Also, glad to hear that the Nocturne is going well. One piece of unsolicited advice, though, if I may offer ye, and I'm sure you know this, but be careful about bumping the voltage up to 18V. I did that a long time back on one pedal and found out that adapters with the proper voltage and current rating were difficult to find. However, you can "test" your circuit with 2-9V batteries wired in series to see how it responds to 18V before committing one way or the other. Just be sure either way to have a good high-pass filter at the AC/DC power end/adapter to cut out the 60Hz AC hum.

Finally have a Happy Easter to you, your family, and all of the other folks on HDVDL.

happy easter to you 2, and I'm glad I got to share that video here..rare gem for sure.

regarding the voltage, I want to build an internal multiplier so a simple
9v volt is giving up double the voltage to the circuit.
dont know if thats going to happen, right now I'm trying to tame the darn thing and will have to figure out a buffer circuit because it doesnt like to be infront of a pedalboard but rather at the end of the chain.
