btw: a technical question: the Pick ups are Gretsch Filtertrons, right? At what time TV Jones came in the Setzer sound? From "Dirty Boogie" or earlier? This is from Tvjones own words ( nicked from a mag, a small part of a huge interview) In the late summer of 1998, Rich asked me to come up with a vintage reproduction of the Filter’Tron for Brian’s new Hot Rod model that Gretsch was going to introduce in 1999. Brian chose between several samples made by other pickup makers. I didn’t have all the Filter’Tron parts I needed, but I knew of some American-made parts I could use that would make a huge difference. At the time, the Brian Setzer Signature pickup had a thinner, Gibson-style Alnico magnet. For a Filter’Tron it had sort of a dull tone. I’m not sure what alloy the metric pole screws were made from – they were shaped with a sphere. The original Filter’Tron had #6 Fillister-head screws with a cylindrical shape to the heads, and a thicker Alnico magnet, which makes a big difference. All of the sample pickups were taken to Brian and he did a blind test. It took a couple of days to hear about the results, and luckily, he chose my pickup. About a week later I got a call from Fred Gretsch. He asked me if I could fly to Japan to show the Gretsch pickup factory how I made the new Hotrod pickup. I also visited the Terada Guitar Factory in Nagoya, to see how the Gretsch guitars were made A couple of weeks before I was tinkering around with guitars and pickups, and the next thing I know Fred Gretsch is on the phone going over the trip to Japan with me and making sure I had a passport. After returning from Japan, Fred Gretsch and his wife Dinah were visiting in Los Angeles and they asked if they could stop by my shop and meet me in person. While at my shop, Fred asked if I could work for the Gretsch Guitar Company as a liaison between his endorsees and The Gretsch Guitar Company. That’s when the relationship with Gretsch really started and it’s been wonderful ever since. In the summer of 1999 I was helping Fred design some guitars for the Gretsch Historic line. He asked me to fly to Korea to visit two or three guitar factories and several pickup factories, in order to help with the Electromatic, Syncromatic, and Historic guitars. That was a great experience. Before my trip to Korea, I was asked to come up with a couple of “good looking Gretsch pickups” that would be used in these guitars – ones that wouldn’t look like a typical Humbucker or P-90. When you see the term “TV Jones Design” it basically means I designed the look of the pickup. I also gave a little input to how much output they should have. They’re basically stock, entry-level pickups designed for less expensive guitars. Some of these pickups use Alnico, and some use ceramic magnets. TQR: So it all started with that one Filter’Tron reproduction? Yep. It all started with the Filter’Tron.
TQR: What were the “shortcomings” in vintage or reissue production pickups that you set out to elimi - nate and how? The big problem I saw with the current Gretsch Filter’Tron was that the pickup cover was almost twice as thick, which dampened the fidelity, and the use of ceramic magnets versus Alnico magnets. That was a big problem. The ceramic magnets are too hot and the trebles are kind of bright and brittle compared to the Alnico, which are smoother. As a player, I find I have more musical control with Alnico magnets. I can control dynamics and overall tone, depending on how light I pick or how hard I dig in.
Another problem I found with the reissue Filter’Tron was that the pole screw heads were spherical. The original Filter’Tron pickups had Fillister head pole screws, which are shaped more like a cylinder. I found that the string-to-string separation was better with the Fillister head poles screws. I did a test where I removed the pole screws for the B string on the stock factory pickup and by removing the pole screws, I saw that pole screws from the G and the E string still picked up the B string almost at full volume. I did the same test with the Fillister heads and I heard a great drop in volume. TQR: We were surprised to hear that every screw and every part used in your pickups is made in the USA. All USA-made, and every time I have these parts made they’re all inspected before they go into the pickups. I have every part analyzed… I have metallurgists check everything out. I may be a little insane… We keep the prices down by ordering larger quantities of parts. Being all made in the USA, it’s hard to keep prices down, but so far we’ve been able to do that. That main thing is that the quality doesn’t suffer. Another issue with the stock factory pickup was that the bridge pickup wasn’t tall enough. That’s crucial with the Filter’Tron – you want to get the bobbins close enough to the strings for maximum growl. You also want to have a balanced output with the neck pickup. So I went ahead and designed a completely independent bridge pickup. The shape of the bobbin, the way it’s wound, the pole screw alloy, wider pole to pole spacing…it’s a completely different pickup. Many guitar manufacturers over the years have always had just one pickup that they put in all positions. … I try and do a lot of little things that add up and make a big difference in the end. TQR: You also used a different technique that was vastly different from how Gretsch was winding them. The pickups made in the ‘90s and early 2000 era were wound with thinner magnet wire, so it’s going to generally have a darker tone with a little more output. The ceramic magnet was used to bring out the treble and give it some sparkle. They sound pretty cool at low volume, but you really hear the difference when you play with a band or at stage volume with the Alnico pickups. The use of ceramic magnets helped keep the cost down in production. TQR"
