I'm in the "Off Topic" section, so cut me some slack.

While channel surfing tonight, came across an old standby, "Dirty Dancing."

This movie is a hands down winner for best "losing of virginity" scenes. Really...Patrick Swayze without a shirt, dim lights, "Cry to Me," what more would a girl need? During the time that movie was made...Swayze had quite the muscle tone too.

This lead me to thinking about another favorite movie of mine (no, not "Smokey & the Bandit") but "Bull Durham." Which I have to give credit for best emotional capture of perfect (?) "one night stand."

This leads me to thinking about "those songs" that trigger memories of someone, some special event in your life. Trisha Yearwood's "The Song Remembers When" describes it best. You can be out & about conducting your life, and you'll hear a song on the radio that takes you back to a bittersweet time in your life. For me, *that* song is Stevie Nick's "Leather & Lace." The story that goes with this song isn't that exciting...save to say it was just a great night!! Proven only by the hangover the next day! Yikes! drunken

This leads me to thinking...what memories will be stirred up by the upcoming new album. Or will memories be created by seeing a new BSO concert? I know we're all so anxious (ok most us, save the nay-sayers) to hear what creations have been running around inside Setzer's mind waiting to be unleashed.

The thought of creations running around inside one's mind reminds me that.....insomnia sucks. It's time to try sleeping again.

Maybe "Dirty Dancing" is replaying on another channel by now....

I kind of obsess about 80s music, but for all of the time I spent (and continue to spend) listening to it, I'm really hard pressed to think of songs that spark a memory of what was going on when I first heard it. For some reason, I just don't have that link between music and experience.

Movies are a different thing. When I see a movie from back in the day, I can remember who I first saw it with, what theater I saw it at, what was going on in my life, etc. Hmm. Wonder why that is?

My nominee for "Best Capture of Emotionless, Unfulfilling Teen Sex" is from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

My nominee for "Closest Thing to an Elvis Movie Produced During the 80s" is "Footloose." If you haven't seen it since high school, do yourself a favor. Watch it - it's hilarious! The best is the scene where he's all ticked off, and he drives to this abandoned factory or grain mill or whatever it's supposed to be, and works off his frustration by ... dancing, of course!

PS: St. Elmo's Fire was posted on YouTube a few weeks ago - don't know if it's still there or not. That's another one I hadn't seen in ages. I think it captures the attitudes (and fashions) of the time pretty well.

Wow, Enjay, you hit the nail on the head! My life is defined by music. Driving to the Drive-In theater with the boyfriend listening to Fugazi and Dead Milkmen. Blowing my speakers in college to Ozzy (long story...), hanging around the jukebox in jr. high listening to Stray Cats; taking wild trips downtown to see Catherine Wheel, Smashing Pumpkins, and various other bands. Every time I hear a song from my past, it's like I'm instantly transported to that one moment in time.

I thought for a long time that my life is defined by music... and the longer I'm around, I think this is true. Things happen around the house that will trigger lyrics in my head, and then my husband and I will look at each other and then start singing the song. I always tell him to get out of my head...I guess that's what happens when you've been with someone over 20 years. (we started dating when we were very young Laughing )

It is going to be interesting to see what new memories will be made when we listen to the upcoming Setzer album. The emotional tone of an album definitely lends to the type of memories that will be made, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Hope you got some sleep!

Oh my goodness somebody keep me outta this thread, I'll never shut up. Suffice it to say that YES!!! I am not only a member of this club I'm also the president! The song-memory connection has become incredibly strong at this particular point in my life and I have no doubt Lonely Avenue will provide more of the same. I'm gonna stop talking now so I don't rattle on and on and crash the board.

Oh, what an interesting thread! I don't really have a film in mind, as I haven't seen a lot, specially form the 80s, but some music comes to my mind for those romantic one night stands, so here goes the soundtrack:
*** NOTE: this music is allowed for couples as well ***

* Sheryl Crow - Run Baby Run, My Favourite Mistake
* All Saints - Never Ever
* Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough
* Black Crowes - She Talks To Angels
* Buckcherry - Rose
* Chris Isaak - Wicked Game
* Bruce Springsteen - I'm On Fire
* Jennifer Paige - Crush
* KD Lang - Constant Craving
* KT Tunstall - Stoppin' The Love
* Lee Rocker - Goin' Down Hard
* Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love
* New Radicals - You Get What You Give
* Pretenders - Brass In Pocket
* Robbie Williams - Angels
* The Knack - Can't Put A Price On Love
* The Who - Substitute
* U2 - One

Hope you like it!
