SITE PRE-SALE DATE: 10/16/2009
SITE SHIP DATE: 10/30/2009
LIMITED EDITION QUANITITY: 7000

The great and highly influential Buddy Holly had a relatively brief three year professional recording career. However, because of his enormous talent, enthusiasm for music, and the fortunate emergence of recording tape while he was quite young, we have been left with a vast recorded legacy of 203 tracks that fill out the six CDs of this new limited edition Hip-O Select box set, “Not Fade Away/The Complete Studio Recordings And More.”

The 203 tracks range from his earliest recordings when 12 to 15 years old to demos with Bob Montgomery; from his earliest recordings with The Crickets and a set of garage recordings to his first studio recordings for Decca in Nashville; from the Coral and Brunswick recordings and hits that made him famous to his heralded apartment tapes. There are 6 previously unreleased tracks, including most of an August 1955 session, plus another 11 recordings previously unreleased in the U.S. Furthermore, all of the original, locatable undubbed original recordings are here as well as all 57 of the overdubbed versions recorded both in New York City and Clovis months and even years after the “day the music died.” Many of these recordings are also hard-to-find or are making their CD debut, having only appeared on the 1979 LP/cassette box set .

The music on “Not Fade Away” is packaged in a yearbook size 80 page book, featuring numerous rare photos and session-by-session recording information. There are also two sets of liner notes: “Legacy” by Billy Altman, which puts Buddy’s career in perspective, and “The Music” by Bill Dahl, a lengthy tome that traces the music session by session. Consultant for this project is noted Holly historian Bill Griggs, with special thanks to Maria Elena Holly. “Not Fade Away” was produced by Universal’s Andy McKaie.

Wow, very exciting! I was on the buddyholly.com discussion board (when it existed), and the fans were always talking aobut something like this. Now it's finally happening!

I think I'd prefer all those alternate takes and false starts be on the last one or two discs - there are a lot of them! Seems like the flow of the discs will suffer with all of that stuff in amongst the polished tracks.

MEMPHISSUN, thank you so much for the heads up. When I first started getting into 50's rock & roll, I bought "From the Original Master Tapes" and adored every song on it - it kept me going for a few years while I was discovering other music from that time. Then when I found James Intveld (way too late, as is usually the case with me) I got "The Memorial Collection," almost exclusively so I could hear Holly's version of "Modern Don Juan." Yet again, I loved every song on the set.

It seems like every note the guy ever sang and played (at least, the ones I've heard) has that pure, unadulterated 1950's quality. But contrasted with Cochran and Valens, the other two giants of the era that come to mind with careers essentially encapsulated in the 50's, Buddy had a level of genius and ingenuity that made his work progressive and new-sounding, even though he never had the opportunity to change with the times like Gene Vincent, Elvis, and even Bill Haley did. And while I love those guys, I've never appreciated their later stuff as much as the music that initially made them famous.

I know I could easily become a rabid Buddy Holly collector, but I'm consciously avoiding the spending spree. My Setzer mania is enough to keep me broke for the time being. Smile I definitely agree with Bear, I've never liked having all the alternate takes and outtakes in amongst the "real" recordings - but I guess that's what iPod playlists are for.

Argh, I am totally conflicted. Want.

"From the Original Master Tapes"...was one of quite a few Holly CD"s i have!.

I can see what you mean about the outtakes etc,but that"s for the collector!.

Just like the JAILHOUSE ROCK CD from FTD,full of out takes and stuff in true stereo been issued for the 1st time.

50"s fan"s mostly want as much of this stuff in A1 sound!.

Just got new"s that there is a 3xcd of Benny Joy out...soon!.
