2009 has been the year of the delay...
This one sounds pretty darned cool, tape-like/DMM like, and alot simpler & cheaper than the Empress...

It does seem to be an excellent delay (and I am a fan of Tech21 gear- their Blonde pedal is amazing ) but for those of us in Europe its not that much cheaper than the Empress (current rate is about $320)
Not to thread jack but it appears that the Wampler "Faux Tape Echo" is now finally out
Here is the original prototype video
and here is a new one of the production model (with even a bit of "rockabilly" type playing in it!)
It sure does sound good
Why are there so many good options out there now

The Wampler doesn't have a long enough delay time... you can't really do a proper "sleepwalk" with it. But the Tech 21 really has my interest... and my Superdelay has only been here a week!

No way! I love the Empress!! But I also like the idea of something a bit simpler... you know, I don't have to tweak it to find the tone I want, it just HAS the tone I want. That's what's interesting about the Tech21.
As far as the Memory Men go, I dig the whole DMM thing... but the real analog ones don't have enough delay time for me, or I'd already have an XO sitting here.
Het Tavo, you diggin' on the Empress?

Can I say the learning curve is damn irritating when you know a DL4 like that back of your hand. I mean I've used a DL4 for what, 10yrs? seems like it. anyway, I sat down for the first time last night after a few beers and went through it. for the money its an everything delay of the highest quality.. BUT I HATE the programming, its totally 1980s midi controller style. Cant deny its tone and versatility. BUT 'm laughin that you are thinkin the same thing " damn I want something fast n simple that sounds like the EMPRESS "..
we call that a FULLTONE TTE or EP-2

I love having the presets on the Empress, but it does take a little getting used to for the programming & changing. If you're not careful, you can save over a preset you DIDN'T want to overwrite!
It won't be soon, but I might just pick up the Tech 21 to see how it fares. The fact that it doesn't have presets isn't a big deal when you've only got a few knobs, and tap tampo. Basically, IF (that's a BIG "if"), it can sound as "digital" as the Empress for my Edge/U2 games, as well as "warm but clear" for those DMM/tape tones, and of course warm/analog for those DM-2 tones, it might just be something worth having over the Empress... simply because, as great as the Empress is, I'll never use all it's capabilities. And for $250 less, the Tech 21 MIGHT be able to do everything *I* need in a delay, and take up less real estate.
Like I said, not soon, but I do see myself picking one up. If you see one around Tavo, give it a test drive & let us know what you think.

that overwriting thing is what drives me nuts..but its quality is way up there with the tc electronic units I employed on my audio rack for live sound... The tech21 stuff I dont have much confidence in as we use to go through those things too often, and I'm speaking of the not so digital Bass preamp. Damn things always quit on us..
I have this chip on my shoulder about cheap electronics, and I dont know if you've opened the empress but it looks no different inside than any other whispy lookin digi effects unit. It even used cheap cheap pcb mount in/out jacks with nylon nuts... for $450 that pisses me off. I want neutrik connectors hardmounted with flying leads...
I'm having a love/hate moment with the Empress.. its like a really hot chick that is so fun to hit the club with but annoys the hell out of you when your sittin around tryin to watch the football game. ( man oh man Andrea Harkins you were a brunette hottie but I had to dump ya when I laid eyes on this cute little blonde i've now been with for 25yrs, chanda smiled at me and loved watching football... game over!!)
..sorry got silly there but you get my point. My beloved DL4 is now in australia..sniffle sniffle So I will for now dance the night away with the sultry Empress brunette with her lusty voice!

I think that Wampler sounded good. Could have a nice slappy tone to it.
