| SHOW REPORT:
They were on! Everybody sounded great. As usual, the crowd was very slow to warm up (so was Brian, actually), but by the time the trio came out, everyone was in full swing.
The girls sounded fabulous, as did Brian.
Tony (the new drummer) sounded great, but Bernie was missed. Tony hits more like a rock drummer, a "bigger" sound than Bernie... not better or worse, just different. I'm just used to seeing Bernie behind the skins, but Tony did great.
SONG OF THE NIGHT: Lonely Avenue (BSO) Fishnet Stockings (Trio)
GEAR REPORT:
The Black Phoenix & new White Hot Rod made appearances, but most of the night was the trusty ol' '99 Hot Rod, and an orange 6120 (not sure if it was a vintage or an SSLVO, but the back of it had buckle rash to the bare wood.)
Same ol' Bassman & 301. BUT this time he had ANOTHER Bassman set up about 3 feet behind the one in front. It wasn't on, I imagine it was there as a backup if needed.
His tone was, as always, to die for. Does he EVER have a bad tone live??? His live tone is better than his tone on records, I think sometimes.
A fun night, a good show (SOLD OUT), and as usual, the BSO did not disappoint.

I would guess it may be gone for good, which is a shame. "Gimme Some Rhythm Daddy" is one of my favorite tracks on the album. I love the great sense of humor the song has, in the tradition of Louis Jordan, and many other great songs of the 40s. The orchestra swings hard on this one, and the tune has a theatrical, 42nd Street feel to it. It should be the perfect showcase for a stage performance. However, the song is new, the lyrics move by quickly, and then you have two singers trying to coordinate their entrances, nail the lyrics, and sing in perfect unison (while one of them plays guitar). It has to be nerve-wracking to perform live. Kbilly, you seem to be the only one here on the board who saw the Detroit show. How did it sound there? As much as I love the tune, the one criticism I have of the studio recording is that the vocals are a hair flat in places. It isn't the easiest key to sing. But it can be done. Andi proved that with her multi-track project. Her vocal track is practically pitch perfect, and it's also a bit brighter and louder in the mix, which makes the whole song sound more in tune. Now that the BSO's on the road, there probably isn't much time for rehearsing. But I hope Brian considers whipping the tune into shape for another performance later in the tour. The majority of the audiences at these Christmas shows probably aren't as familiar with the new album, but this song has great potential to be a real crowd pleaser. | I'd be willing to bet that the song being cut from the setlist has very little to do with how the band played it, and more to do with how well (or NOT) it was received by audiences.
Altho, that wouldn't explain why the ear-bleeding "Honey Man" is still in the setlist... audiences don't know what to do with that one. At least not the Easton audience, last 2 tours.

| I didn't mean to imply the band played it badly. It doesn't seem as difficult as some of the other charts, except for the drum part, which would be a workout for Tony (who only performed on some of the tracks on the record, and I don't know if this was among them.)
I was speaking more to the lyrical content and the challenges it presents. On so many songs, the verses repeat, and the chorus is relatively simple, so it's easier to pull off night after night. This song is considerably more intricate lyrically than, say, Rock This Town, Stray Cat Strut, This Cat's On a Hot Tin Roof or (insert holiday chestnut here) which he's played hundreds, perhaps thousands of times. Even Trouble Train doesn't have the added challenge of two vocalists carrying the song. Rumor has it Brian gave Lee Rocker the vocals on "Bring It Back Again" on recent Stray Cats tours because Brian couldn't remember the lyrics, while Lee had been singing it with his band for years.
I do take your point about noting the crowd response. I remember Brian played Really Rockabilly just once in Japan. I would have loved to have seen the crowd reaction to that one. But I have to say on Christmas tours, how can you tell what goes over well, especially early in the set? Half the crowd probably owns 1-2 Setzer albums, and is there to enjoy a Christmas show. They probably know Rock This Town, Strut, Jump Jive and Wail, and the Christmas songs. If they're paying attention to the lyrics at all, I think Give Me Some Rhythm Daddy would amuse them. But perhaps it just didn't feel right to Brian, Mrs. Brian, and the band.

Your probably right & i hate when that happens , Brian put out a new album & i'd love to hear way more from it , let's hope he does a big tour in 2010 playing a tone from it .
