| Well Ive finally got my perfect set up so ive posted some pics. ( Gretsch hot rod, gretsch ssu and Sparkle jet copy all loaded with TVJones standard filtertrons thru the Nocturne pedal, then into a Maxon AD999 analogue delay, then into Marsh 6G6B head and Fender Vibrolux 2x12 cab with a THD Hotplate for smaller rooms, bedroom practice etc.) I must tell you- Ive recorded some tracks with my band onto cd with this rig and last night I gigged with this rig and it sounds awesome! but the magic is in the Nocturne pedal - cos if you play thru this rig with the nocturne OFF it sounds sort of ok - but as soon as you kick the Nocturne ON, the whole sound just comes alive -Fat, smooth, jangly, rich and gorgeous. Chords sound delicious - then when you fingerpick, the notes seem to 'pop' out which means you can play more relaxed cos you're not fighting to get the notes out, thus, enjoying (and not worrying about) your sound whilst playing with more ease and less effort, means you can start concentrating on improving your playing technique! Ive played roughly 300 gigs with my band and now, at last, ive finally found my ideal sound to do something with. The irony of course is that by chasing Setzers tone, you will start to find your own unique voice. [img] p.s Im gonna be postin a video clip of me demo-ing the nocturne thru this rig very soon and also i'll post a couple of the tracks my band recorded. cya soon | |

| That's a cool rig there. Prior to the TTE i used the Maxon Ad999 too. I still carry it in my bag, just in case the TTE would give up. | |

| That is a great looking rig! I love the amp, cab, and those guitars are tops!
How do those vibroking cabs sound in comparison to the bassman cabs?

| Hi All thanx for the responses to the pics - especially those who hate me ( hello Ruger9) ha! I gotta thank u tho Ruger9 cos it was you bangin on about the Maxon ad999 with its pure analogue sound and more than enough 'sleepwalk' milliseconds , that made me buy it - many thanx mate i luv it' Hi 'im Incinerator' - soz Ive never tried the Marsh thru a real Bassman cab so I cant tell ya how it compares to my Vibroking - no doubt its probably better ( or different at least) but im happy with the vibroking cos it sounds good and its no where near as heavy By the way the sparkle jet was made by my mate, and fellow bandmate slapbassplayer, Chris. He makes guitars for a hobby and it feels and sounds ace thru the rig. He works in antiques and this guitar started out in life as a Victorian mahogany sideboard! Anyway here's a song my band recorded using the rig shown in the pics usinng the Limegold hotrod http://www.myspace.com/vavoomaltproBTW Tavo et all yeh course you can come round if you happen to be passin thru - got plenty o' smokes and a nice bottle of Glenn Morangie on the go Cheers chaps | |

| @andi 3 questions: What mics and mic pres did you record your cab with on that song? did you get the mercury mag transformers after all? also since youre a single malt scotch lad, have you sampled the Laphroaig 18yr? I got the 15yr and it was real real astringent..almost tasted like a bandaid until you put it on crushed ice.
@ incincerator.. the vibroking cab stacks the 212s diagonally and uses a "tonepost" to couple the front and back together (the bassman or supersonic cabs have a panel that isolates the speakers). The Vibro cabs have a leaner low end but the punch makes the gretsch feel alive. the vibrocab I had allowed me to use a V30 and celestion blue without fear of the blue exploding since its rated at 15watts. You could probably plug your tophat club royale into one and get an awesome gretsch sound that is more fullerton that brit as that amp will handle 4ohm loads.

| hmm, I may have to hunt me down one them VK cabs. More Fullerton than Brit, eh? That can be a good thing...
I got a little while yet 'till I can get a blonde bassman w/o feeling like a self indulgent goon. I already let the soon-to-be-missus that is one thing that I will have. Surprisngly she just said, "that is cool as long as you don't expect me to help you." Then asked what is a blonde bassman...

| never mind the moron in the picture(sorry I've posted this one too many times).. take a gander at the VK cab. you can see the celestion blue through the grill since it has that grey paper surround. Its a great cab.. (I lost it at that session in order to pay off the engineer) | |

Two 6G6-B's and four speakers, that would be fun times, especially with a big bodied maple Gretsch with filtertrons I would be terrified to have a 40-50 watter running through a blue. I'm no speaker tech guy but it would seem even paired with something like a V30, the blue is still at risk.

Gerhard made sunkidd a tophat 412 with greenbacks on one side and blues on the other when he had my Emplex 40 (essentially a class A version Blonde) On that vibroking king cab I ran the speaker jack to the V30 first and then parallel'd over to the vox blue. turned the amp up to its full power. (the song "saturation" on my myspace page is that rig cranked with the TIM pedal tearing up the front end of the amp) @ Andy... you gonna answer those questions mate? where'd ya go?

| Hey Roland - thanx for diggin the track and cheers Chunkymac - will deffo giv u a shout if we gig down your way - thanks mate.
Talkin of giggin - last weekend we played in a tiny pub in merseyside and the THD HOTPLATE worked a treat. Had my Nocturne on nearly full Gritsch, the Marsh 6g6b on 3-4 and the Hotplate knockin it down 8db... Voila! dogs bollocks sound without pinnin punters to the back wall!
Eyup Tavo mate, soz for gettin back latebut anyway - we recorded the tracks at a local studio and the engineer miced up my Vibroking cab with a Shure SM7. It then ran straight into the desk with a built-in Soundtracs MXR pre-amp. He then added a little DBX compression. He also said that it was an easy guitar sound to work with cos it was so good 'at source' i.e the rig thats in the photos ( might've been a different story with my old rig - a tubescreamer thru a fender hot rod deluxe!) Also, sorry to digress, but if you remember a while back on the 'Mark Winchester bass- sound' thread, well our band has deffo moved on from a weak, clickety-clack slap bass sound to a much better, bigger ,fuller bass sound - and the solution? - an extra sound post under the bridge - Kills it acoustically, but live, with a K and K pickup and an Ampeg- its gone massive!
Also Tavo im sorry but Im not sure what sort of transformer (mercury mag?) ive actually got - I think it was Vince Ray who was lookin into that one.
Almost forgot - whiskey -sorry but im entry level - only just discovered ( since gettin a bottle of glenn Morangie as a gift) how nice whiskey actually can be, so im enterin a new learnin curve on this one- an im lookin forward to it! Anyway good chattin to you all, thanks loads cya

I still may go for the bassman or tonemaster/super sonic cab when the time comes (thumb twiddling never ends). I do have that Fane V30 that I can use in a cab, maybe I will pick up an unloaded cab and one of those hellatone V30 from avatar? It seems for a rock set up that'd be the way to play? The Marsh route is getting more tempting by the day. Though the transitional tuxedo look is really growing on me (again) after seeing that blackface amp/white falcon motif that The Dead Weather has going on. I'd need to get a white falcon or penguin, or a billy-bo penguin. I wonder if Marsh can do one up like that?

| as long as they are in a closed back cabinet they can usually handle alot more power than stated on there specs. Im sure i read somewhere that the original 4x12 marshall cabs only had drivers capable of handling 15w each and they were paired up with 100w heads and worked fine. there is so much voodoo around W's vs Db vs what you can actually stand to be in a room with, but at $100+ a speaker i too worry about those poor little voice coils ending up looking like a firework | |

Even wholesale they are just shy of 2 bills... but ya they can take a pounding in closed back cabs. That is if you are going for overdriven sounds.. There is a reason for a vintage 30 to have a larger voice coil and extensive doping on the cone and while they get a bad rap with the plank guitar players, they really let a gretsch speak its full sonic spectrum. probably why Setzer decided they worked in the blonde cab eh? Smart guy that Brian Setzer!

| and here i am getting tight about the price of v30's over here..... Have found a cab that retails just over £110 that has 2 v30's in, so bought one just to nick the v30's out of for my marsh when it comes. saved me £20 a speaker lol. How is your amp project coming along??? | |

Gotta save for the cab and right speaker(s), tubes, etc. too. Rawnster is giving up on the two rock? I don't hang out on the TopHat forums these days because I changed my e-mail address on my account and it inactivated my account and I tried to reactivate it and haven't heard back in over a year...How is the mini blonde coming along? I saw a guy on GDP working on a blonde "bassboy", which I thought could have been yours, but didn't seem like it.

| Ron has his two rock but it led him to studying linear tube electronics I guess and building a better beast. His stuff looks like the hifi stuff I want to see in an amp build so I decided to share my design and he's doing the layout and engineering the prototype. I havent said too much because I am more than certain that the practicality and supreme components will make a statement to any one that has wanted a blonde bassman because it isnt just "like a blonde" this is more of what Brian Setzer would play if fender was smart enough build him the bassman of his dreams AND wouldnt compromise on build ( fender had bruce zinky build the vibroking that was a dream machine then changed crap for price point, yet STILL has a list of $5K) yet have a price point that normal humans could get the scratch for($995). This has been mulling around in my head waaay longer than the space echo pre amp and you know I use to ramble on forever at the tophat forum about these amps (by the way you should have told me about your account, I'm suppose to be administrating over there). Anyway, Marsh is currently the only one out there who "Gets it" and isnt so stuck in replicating the surf amp. I hope that with my build I can finally break open the blonde amp being a docile surf amp and shed light on the fact that the Who and the Beatles actually used some of these blonde amps for some real important recordings. My current goal at the moment though is stuffin it all into a princeton size cab that is only 19" wide (its tall enough for the spring 'verb pan to fit though). It will look like this but in blonde Its a plan finally happening thanks to Ron and I'm overjoyed to take possession of the proto chassis and put up against my 2 blondes. | |
