| I spend this last weekend up north with my dad on our yearly golf trip with a group of guys. Last year, we had miss the trip due to my grandmother's death, and I was looking forward to heading back up this summer.
After golfing and eating dinner last night, my wife called me in tears. Our 9 year old dachshund, Snoopy, whom I have spoke about here several times already, had been attacked.
My little brother in law, 17, was walking Snoopy in a park near their home. Snoopy has been staying with them for a while because my sister in law just graduated and wanted to play with Snoopy and have him around, it also allowed for our puppy Rocky to be in our house without taunting Snoopy.
On the walk, a lady had 2 large dogs on leashes, but she apparently slipped and the leashes fell out of her hand, and from what I understand, they started to attack. I honestly don't know if any dog barked at one another first, or if any of the dogs were egging on one another, but I do know the outcome of the situation.
These 2 dogs attacked my little friend on the top quarter of his body. Pretty much all around his entire neck and up to his left ear suffered severe lacerations from the attack, and he did lose quite a bit of blood. My brother in law, still in shock and quite shaken from this incident, had his shirt covered in blood from carrying him to the car to be brought to the vet.
My wife called me as I was getting ready to head to our hotel, and she let me know everything she knew, but she was in shock herself from having her childhood dog maimed by 2 others. And just to make this situation worse, I am stuck 3 hours away from home and all I can do is call people or text people to try to help.
I called the other dogs owner and talked with her, and she was upset. I could tell in her voice that she was hurting along with us because she was a dog lover as well, and she felt just terrible that our dog was a victim to something her dogs caused. I assured her I would not be pursuing any actions that would call for her dogs to be put down, but I told her I needed to file a police report for the sake of covering my own ass. She also agreed to cover the bills to make sure Snoopy was fine.
Snoopy underwent surgery around 230am late last night, and finally ate something earlier this afternoon. My wife and sister in law picked him up this morning from the emergency vet to bring him to our normal vet to be watched and cared for appropriately, and I was told he looked absolutely terrible.
Snoopy has a coat of hair that you would think was that of a horse or something that could win an award. He has such smooth hair, and it is such a beautiful color too. I often brag about his coat because we really do nothing to spruce it up, he is just blessed with amazing hair for a dog. That is all shot now.
When we picked him up this evening to bring him home, my wife let me know he looked a hundred times better, but you could have fooled me. He looked like he had been through a lot, and he was barely walking. A lot of his demeanor was because of the drugs, but I also know deep inside that these dogs hurt my friend. He looked empty.
Right now, Snoopy is asleep in his bed, which is sitting in my sister in laws bed, and she is keeping him company while he sleeps. We have another appointment tomorrow night to give him another checkup, and who knows how long we will be doing these until we can safely say he will make it.
I really don't know what more I can do for him, except the obvious TLC.
I just want my little guy to make it.

| BK, I'm so sorry. I am glad to hear he survived though, and it sounds like he'll heal up just fine and his coat will be back up to snuff. Thinking of all of you. | |

| Thanks all,
It has been a rough few days with travel and work and Snoopy's situation compounding on top of one another, but we did have a good day today. His catheter was removed and he was walking at a better pace today. His demeanor appears to have been improving from time to time, but there was also quite a few times when we were thinking he was in increased pain due to his down looks and only wanting to lay down.
We spent enough time with him to allow him to cuddle with each of us and also took him outside so he could finally take care of his own business, which he had not done since Sunday afternoon before the attack.
Again, thank you all for your thoughts and messages, it has not been an easy last few months/year trying to deal with Snoopy even being allowed to live with us, then our new puppy added more stress when he decided to eat everything he could including rat poison, and now this. He is a strong little wiener dog and I really think he is gonna kick some ass.
Vic, I will let ya know if anything comes up, I am sure we may shoot a few questions past ya if anything changes over here in the next few days.

| Thanks for the update, jk. Sounds like things are headed in the right direction - not as quickly as you'd like, I'm sure.
Give us an update every couple of days, OK? | |

| Go Snoopy! Get better soon little fella. Sounds like he went through the wringer on this one, but he's in good hands and receiving lots of TLC. I don't care what anyone says, dogs are family...and I hope that your four-legged family member is back to 100% quickly.
Hang in there, hrg | |

| BK,
Pets can be very resilient at times. I have no doubt Snoopy has a ton of TLC at home, and I hope for a swift recovery for the little guy.
We had a cat who was an indoor cat, wanting desperately to be an outdoor cat. One day, he got his wish and escaped when my Dad was hauling in groceries. After three days he made it back to the bushes beside our front door with a broken hind leg. We thought he had either been hit by a car, or some cruel SOB kicked or hit him with an object. In any case, the cat made it back, dragging his leg behind him.
After a month or so with surgeries and pins joined by a rod inserted into the leg, the prognosis was not good. The leg was rejecting the metal apparatus holding the bones together. Finally, the vet said "let's try casting it for a few weeks. Either it will heal or we'll amputate, or explore other options." I assume euthanasia was one of the "other options." Sure enough, the leg healed on its own and my parents enjoyed many more years with him. The vet told us "they say if you put the cat and the leg in the same room, they'll figure out a way to get together." I notice he said that after the check cleared for the first surgery.
Anyway, the point of the story is to never give up on your pets, if you truly view them as part of your family. Obviously, sometimes there are humane measures that have to be taken. But Snoopy seems to have the determination and the love surrounding him to make it. I wish you, JK, Rocky and Snoopy all the best!

| Thanks again to all of ya, Mrs. JK and I have been completely at a loss for words by the support from so many people, and at an emotional time when her school year has come to an end. A quick update on my little buddy. Snoopy had 2 drainage tubes in his neck, those were taken out a few days ago and those incisions have appeared to healed already. His stitches and staples will come out in about 10 days. As he has been staying at J's parents house for a while, her sister being home from college and misses her doggy, so we stopped by last night, Snoopy came and sat in my lap for about an hour, falling asleep, and he just happened to place his paw in my hand, it was fabulous. Watching him walk from behind is a little comical. Most of his shoulder and neck area has been shaved, and his coat is pretty thick, so he looks like a fat little wiener dog with a skinny neck/head. That's all to report from Sunny Minnesota, Thanks again to all y'all. -BK (And of course JK, SnoopyKool and RockyKool) | |

| Ah, great news, BK! Glad to hear the little guy is coming through with flying colors despite the funky haircut.
By the way, where is this sunny Minnesota you speak of? I just spent 4 days up there and the sun was nowhere to be found!

| Thanks again everyone. Rickabilly, first off, I am sure you weren't near my neck of the woods, I think I remember you saying your family up here is a little out of the way, but, next time, let's hit a Twins game at our new Target Field. "Sunny Minnesota" is not that biggest ball of truth. We have been just sitting in crap for the last week or so. We finally saw a little sun today, but, even that wasn't enough to create a fabulous day. I met with the owner of the dogs that attacked Snoopy tonight, and she and her boyfriend were very gracious and pleasant to meet with. I think it was a very necessary step for both of us to move on from the situation and bring peace to both sides. I thanked them for being so positive to work with through the entire situation, as it could have very easily turned into something terribly ugly. They handed me a check to cover all expenses and they even gave Snoopy a little present to help him feel better too, next thing I know, Snoopy and Rocky are sharing the presents, and then this happens. Both dogs, in dog beds, on the kitchen table. All we need now is for the stitches and staples to be removed and his hair to grow back. That's one tough wiener! -BK | |

| Snoopy is a "natural casing" wiener. Tough on the outside, soft on the inside. Great picture. It's good to hear that the owners of the other dog have been so easy to work with. It gives me hope in the fact that there still are honest, good people out there. Enjoy your weekend! hrg | |
