Hey fellow Setzer fans. I've been a long time reader but never registered. I figured now was a good time to share this with you. I remeber hearing that the new album Instru-mental was planned for a February release. Well since it is almost Feb. and there has been no mention of anything or pre album promotion, I took it upon myself to contact surfdog. I was shocked to get a same day response. It was short not containing too much details, but it basically said this. "A release date will be announced shortly, and it looks to be looking like an April release". It might not be in February but at least we now know about when to expect it.
I hope it is an amazing record. I know everyone likes all elements of Setzer's music, but I'm not a big fan of the real tounge and cheeck stuff. Like the duet he did with Julie on Lonely Avenue. To me it starts to sound too novelty and in Cherry Poppin' daddy territory. Not that they are a bad group, but i just think the bso are on another plain. So it kind of annoys me when they go tounge and cheek swing, with the hey daddyo references and all that. I'm rambeling, lets just be glad a new record for 2011 will be out soon, and hope it has some mr surfer/jazzer moments.

Thanks for the news TNAllien!
But to add my bit... hope there isn't any Surfer or Jazzer. I think it's just a collection of disorganised guitar riffs/liks with no sense at all, just to fill the album up.
I guess (and this is just my point of view) that many of us are waiting for Rockabilly Riot 2, tribute to whatsoever it is, but I think that a Riot 2 would be amazing. I can't figure out Setzer with just an instrumental record.
Why not another The Knife... or Live Nude Guitars tour??? Wouldn't it be awesome?? Many of us didn't have the chance to witness that, and if there was a Stray Cats reunion back in 2004 and 2007 and a Farewell Tour in 2008-09, why not a "re-tour" of those albums??? I guess they've been pretty much forgotten, but the cuts there are amazing, much better than some of Brian's albums or tracks.

I like the idea of an instrumental record. Not that I want every album from here on out to be all-instrumental, but I think it has the potential to be a bit of an homage to those great guitarists who could release great albums without a single lyric, like Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Tommy Emmanuel and Jeff Beck. Of course, Les Paul had Mary Ford on vocals, but he also had many all-instrumental albums too.
These albums were usually full of covers of well-known songs, with at least one of the guitar tracks covering the melody, with an occasional original tune. So Brian shouldn't feel any pressure to put together 13 or 14 more Mr.-Surfer-Goes-Jazzin'-in-the-Park-With-Mr.-Motos. As much as I enjoyed the Lonely Avenue album, I think Brian's in fine form interpreting the works of others. Rockabilly Riot was a very strong release, and I look forward to "Setzer Goes (Instru) Mental."

Much better if "Setzer Goes On Tour (through Europe)" though, hehehehe.
But yes, as long as we have something new, that would be great!
BTW, I recently got my BSO It's Gonna Rock... on CD!!!

I think he is doing an instrumental record because he probably feels he gets a great reception from the music industry with them. All the grammy's and nominations with the exception of Jump Jive have been instrumentals. So maybe that is why the time to do an instrumental record seemed like the thing to do for him? I will say this about all his instrumentals. I like them all however, The Wolfgang album for me had the least plays out of the Setzer/Cats catalog. I appreciate the musicianship on that album, it's just seems to novelty. Maybe one or two re-worked classical songs on album fine, but a whole album? Didn't work for me. Those classical songs have been so repeated over and over and over. I mean how many times have we heard flight of the bumblebee in some cleaning product advert or something?
What I think would be cool is for this. I used to go to this local guitar shop. I got friendly with this amazing Jazz guitar teacher. This was maybe 2001 or so. Anyway we were talking about what players we liked, and I mentioned Setzer. He then said, "he's ok but I think he would really shine if he did a straight up 3 piece Jazz instrumental/lounge album". All these years later I think he was on to something. Take for example the song Beutiful blues with those amazing comping chords and amazing Jazz solo. How about a whole instrumental album in that style? That's what I'm waiting for. I do't think we'll ever see a just trad jazz guitar album though. Setzer staple seems to mix upcountry, jazz, and rockabilly. even when interpreting classical you still know its Setzer.

I've always had the impression that Brian records what he wants to record, and doesn't especially care what fans, critics, or Grammy voters like. Surely, the formation of Stray Cats and the BSO couldn't have been chasing the latest trends or pursuing critical adoration. The BSO pre-dated the swing revival of the mid-90s, and in the US, there never really was a true rockabilly revival, at least none with significant commercial or critical success.
I think it's only natural, with the experience he had at the Iridium this past June, celebrating Les Paul's career with Jeff Beck, that he would be moved to pursue an instrumental-only album. I look forward to the release, as I think it's thematically much less restrictive than an album like Wolfgang or even Rockabilly Riot. This is what satisfies Brian creatively at the moment, just as Lonely Avenue's concept took hold of Brian a couple of years ago. I just don't believe the Grammy recognition has anything to do with Brian's motivation on the project.
That said, as a fan, I would love to see Brian finally overtake Jeff Beck in one of the rock or pop instrumental categories at next year's Grammys. With an album's worth of instrumental ear candy, there ought to be enough hardware to go around.

I agree, I hope it's an instrumental record, Brian is FAR underrated as a player (despite the grammies he's won, that no one really knows about, for his instrumental work.) As much as I would love a Rockabilly Riot Vol. 2, I'd like to hear an instrumental album first, just chock full of "Sleepwalks", "Favorite Things", and "Caravans."
NO VOCALS. Brian is also an underrated singer, but just for a change, I'd love to hear a GUITAR album FOR GUITARISTS. It won't sell much compared to his other stuff, he'd have to do it because it's what HE wants to do.
The one thing I hope it's NOT is another "standard" BSO affair. The BSO is my absolute fave, but the albums have gotten...blah...as of late. Even Lonely Avenue, has some real high spots, but... if we're not going to get another Dirty Boogie, I'd rather hear Rockabilly Riot or instrumental.

One of my most appreciated talents of Brian Setzer is his variety. And 2nd his guitar playing and sound.
He can´t repeat a "dirty boogie" album, he still made it. A new Knife tour won`t be smart, he did it and he`s now different from the persom he was in the 80ies.
For sure he could make a 2nd Riot Album, but his talent is always to make new things out of well known styles.

That's what I'm really hoping for, he can fill with his guitar, maybe something like Burrell's "Midnight blue" ??? He'd sooooo rule on something like that!

Well Wee Mark, is still waiting to get his hands on the blu-ray, of Its gonna rock. I did get a copy ,but it was region 1. So it may have to be a Japanese version. To me, Brian does what he wants, or what ever idea, that comes to him. The last BSO, SFLA, was fantastic, the only thing that sucked, was the dreadful LP. it sounded terrible! But at least we Know we have another gem, to look forward too.
As for re doing tours. Yeah i'd love to hear the knife.
But I'd love another 68 CBS Ignition, style album, with Mark and Bernie.
Imelda May was on Breakfast TV, the other day, and Slim Jim/ Stray Cats got a mention. Thought that was nice.
Mark.

As I suspected from the beginning, TenneseeAlien is some scumbag alias for a scumbag poster. Probably the same peanut brain who posted previously as the "black guy studying racism in rockabilly". Hes' got some post up in German referring to Brian, Julie and porn. So ignore the Bastard. I translated it with Google and it's not fit to repeat.

Or, if you prefer:
I do not know German, either. But it is easy to type out something stupid in English, use an online translator to convert it to German, and then cut and paste the inappropriate German post on an English-only message board.
Are you really that bored that you have nothing better to do than to stir up trouble on this message board?
Maybe a better question is, am I really that bored that I have nothing better to do than to respond to a sophomoric attention-seeking poster looking to stir up trouble on this message board?
I suspect the answer to both questions is a resounding "Ja!"
