US Airways - Airplane Crash Empty
PostSubject: US Airways - Airplane Crash   US Airways - Airplane Crash Icon_minitimeThu Jan 15, 2009 1:53 pm

NEW YORK — A US Airways plane crashed into the frigid Hudson River this after striking a bird that disabled two engines, sending 150 on board scrambling onto rescue boats, authorities say. No deaths or serious injuries were immediately reported.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown says the US Airways Flight 1549 had just taken off from LaGuardia Airport enroute to Charlotte, N.C., when the crash occurred in the river near 48th Street in midtown Manhattan.

Brown says the plane, an Airbus 320, appears to have hit one or more birds.

A law enforcement official said that authorities are not aware of any deaths and that the passengers do not appear to be seriously injured. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the rescue was still under way.

The plane was submerged in the icy waters up to the windows. Rescue crews had opened the door and were pulling passengers in yellow life vests from the plane. Several boats surrounded the plane, which appeared to be slowly sinking.

Government officials do not believe the crash is related to terrorism.

"There is no information at this time to indicate that this is a security-related incident," Homeland Security spokeswoman Laura Keehner said. "We continue to closely monitor the situation which at present is focused on search and rescue."

Witnesses said the plane's pilot appeared to guide the plane down.

"I see a commercial airliner coming down, looking like it's landing right in the water," said Bob Read, who saw it from his office at the television newsmagazine "Inside Edition."

"This looked like a controlled descent."

New York City firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard are responding to the crash.

"I saw what appeared to be a tail fin of a plane sticking out of the water," said Erica Schietinger, whose office windows at Chelsea Piers look out over the Hudson. "All the boats have sort of circled the area."

Don't worry, kid! Flying is much safer than driving in a car. Also, a plane's gotta be 10, maybe 20 times safer than living Down Under, with alla' those boomerangs and wallabies and dingos flyin' around!

HAHA! Just messin' with ya! jocolor

Don't worry Kid Setzer!
You might be getting in a car every single day and you never think about having a crash, do you?
Same with planes... and it's the safiest transport on earth. How many accidents a year?? 3??? How many tolls.... 300-400 at the most??
That happens every day with cars, with probably 3.000 toll evey day and no one says a single word about it.... How many kids dying of starvation in Africa, Asia.... tens of thousands every hour! Do we feel ashame?? The answer is NO.
See the positive side of it

THat Pilot did an amazing Job!
I'm learning to fly small planes (gliders with two seats) and even a normal landing with them means a lot of work, but landing on a river with an Airbus can't be compared to that! This guy can fly!!

@Kid: Don't worry, planes are very save. The most dangerous part of flying is the car ride to the airport! Wink

Don't worry about flying... flight crew training is so extensive and so drilled in it is automatic. No pilot in his right mind would ever deliberately crash a plane. They are trained for many, many scenarios, go thru flight simulator training twice or more each year. That water landing saved many lives. Always look at the safety card because the configuration differs with each type of plane... and listen to your cabin and flight crew, who are all trained to save your life!

Ladies and gentlemen, this has been a customer service announcement from your friendly former airline CSA. Thank you for your attention and, wherever this message finds you - whether you are continuing your travels or you call this destination home - I wish you a pleasant day. Smile
