Here are a few more to add into the lyrics section:

“JEANIE, JEANIE, JEANIE”
(* note from me: lyrics here are completely different to Eddie Cochran's *)
Well, Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie come and dance with me
There's a real wild party and the booze is free

First we'll fuck
Yeah, yeah, yeah, tough luck
Yeah, yeah, yeah, then we'll rock
Rock and roll, well do what you're told

Well, I live in Bellmore USA
Well, I rock all night and I sleep all day

First we'll fuck
Yeah, yeah, yeah, tough luck
Yeah, yeah, yeah, then we'll rock
Rock and roll, well do what you're told

Baby, baby you will have to wait
I'll be ready at eight
I keep a knockin' at your front door
I wanted you alone till I get some more

Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie got my blue suede shoes on
Got my pink carnation and my black slacks too

First we'll fuck
Yeah, yeah, yeah, tough luck
Yeah, yeah, yeah, then we'll rock
Rock and roll, well do what you're told

Yeah, rock it right

Baby, baby you will have to wait
I'll be ready at eight
I keep a knockin' at your front door
I wanted you alone till I get some more

Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie come and dance with me
There's a real wild party and the booze is free

First we'll fuck
Yeah, yeah, yeah, tough luck
Yeah, yeah, yeah, then we'll rock
Rock and roll, well do what you're told

“CROSS THAT BRIDGE” (bonus track for Japan, included on "Gonna Ball")
Well, I'm gonna pack my suitcase
Gonna hop right in that car
Don't worry baby you know I won't go far
Gonna cross that bridge
And found out what's going down, New York Town
And once I cross that bridge
You know I'll never turn around

Well I'm going to Manhattan
I'm gonna split this town
Don't want no woman trying to hold me down
Gonna cross that bridge
And found out what's going down
And once I cross that bridge
You know I'll never turn around

Well, I'm cruisin' down Grand Central
Or maybe southern state
Don't worry baby you know I won't be late
I'm gonna cross that bridge
And found out what's going down
And once I cross that bridge
You know I'll never turn around
And once I cross that bridge
You know I'll never turn around, no turnaround
And once I cross that bridge
You know I'll never turn around
Never turnaround
Never gonna turnaround
Never turnaround

“LOOKIN’ BETTER EVERY BEER” (bonus track for Japan, included on "Rant N Rave")
I saved a place in my heart
For your warm sweet embrace
I saved a place by my side for you
And your farewell, just for the record, sounded so sincere
And the girl on my left is lookin' better every beer

I've done my time, I paid my dues
Just to see the skies of blue
It's just as hard being lonely
As it is to be with you
And when you parted
You just knew I'd drown in my own tears
And the girl on my left is lookin' better every beer

I've given up feeling sorry for myself
I've still some pride left inside
And I'll find someone else

I saved a place in my heart
For your warm sweet embrace
I saved a place by my side for you
And your farewell, just for the record, sounded so sincere
And the girl on my left is lookin' better every beer

“LUCKY CHARM” (bonus track for Japan, included on "Rant N Rave")
Ooowee Suzy, baby you're my lucky charm
Ooowee Suzy, baby you're my lucky charm
Ooowee Suzy, your're my lucky charm
Together we'll go walkin' arm in arm
Ooowee Suzy, baby you're my lucky charm

Ooowee Suzy, baby you've got beautiful legs, yeah
Ooowee Suzy, baby you've got beautiful legs
You've got beautiful legs and a lovely shape
I've got my eyes on you baby and you can't escape
Ooowee Suzy, baby you're my lucky charm

I feel lucky

Yeah, if you want to you can think about it, sleep on it, damn it all tomorrow
Well, if you want to you can think about it, sleep on it, damn it all tomorrow, yeah
Tell your mother and your father that you won't be home tonight
We can meet up in the woods underneath the pale moon light

Ooowee Suzy, baby you're my lucky charm
Ooowee baby, you're my lucky charm
Ooowee Suzy, baby you're my lucky charm
Ooowee

“CRUSIN’” (B-side to 12” Sexy + 17)
Cruisin' lookin' for my gal
I'm cruisin' goin' don't know where
Cruisin’ got to find my gal
I'm cruisin' for a bruisin'
That man with her is gonna get

Cruisin' got to find my gal
I'm cruisin' goin' here and there
Cruisin' got to find my gal
Cruisin' for a fight
That man with her will have tonight, cruise

Crusin' ought to find my cat
Cruisin' so we can be a pair
Cruisin' wonderin' where she's at
I'm crusin' for my date
I hope I find before it's way too late, rock

Cruisin' lookin' for my gal
I'm cruisin' going don't know where
I'm cruisin lookin' for my gal
I'm cruisin' for to bruise him bad
That man with her is gonna get
Cruisin', cruisin', crusisin', cruisin'

“DRINK THAT BOTTLE DOWN” (B-side to 12” Stray Cat Strut)
What's a man supposed to do
When the blues have got him down
What's he gonna do when the blues have got him down
Go down the liquor store and you drink your bottle down

Where you gonna run to where you're gonna hide
Where you gonna run to with those blues right down inside
You got no place left to go
Go down the liquor store and you drink your bottle down

Where you gonna run to where you're gonna hide
Where you gonna run to with those blues right down inside
You got no place left to go
Go down the liquor store and you drink your bottle down

“SWEET LOVE ON MY MIND” (B-side to 12” Stray Cat Strut)
Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well, I really love it baby but I’m about to lose my mind
Well, you know I love you honey, I need your lovin' bad
Well give me some sweet love at right this minute or you're gonna make me mad

Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well, you know I love you baby and I cry the whole night through

Yeah you love me, then you leave me and I don't know what to do
Well, you know I love you baby, I need your lovin’ bad
Well give me some sweet love at right this minute or you're gonna make me mad

Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind

Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well, I really love you baby but I’m about to lose my mind
When the mailman comes in the morning, there's a note upon my door
Just bring my mail to the bottom of the river, I don't live here no more

Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind

Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well now won't you love me baby and I know I don't lose my mind
Well, you know I love you baby, you don't treat me right
Give me just a little bit of your sweet love this minute or we're gonna have a big fight

Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind

“YOU CAN’T HURRY LOVE” (B-side to 7” Rock This Town)
I need love, love to ease my mind
I need some fine, fine, someone to call mine
But my mama said you can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
Love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take
Rock

Love, love don't come easy
Yet I keep on waiting anticipating
For that soft voice talk to me at night
For those tender arms wrapped around me tight
But my mama said you can't hurry love
No you just have to wait
Love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take

How long can I wait
How much more can I take
Before loneliness cause my heart, heart to break
Now I can't stand to live my life alone
I grow impatient for a lover to call my own
Well I feel that I that I can't go on
But those precious words keep me hangin' on

Well, my mama said you can't hurry love
No you just have to wait
Love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take
You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
Love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take
Rock

Love, love don't come easy
Yet I keep on waiting anticipating
For that soft voice talk to me at night
For those tender arms wrapped around me tight

But my mama said you can't hurry love
No you just have to wait
Love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take

How long can I wait
How much more can I take
Before loneliness cause my heart, heart to break
Well how many heartaches must I stand
Before I find a love to let me live again
Well now the only thing that keeps me hangin' on
Those precious words keep me hangin' on

Well, my mama said you can't hurry love
No you just have to wait
Love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take
You can't hurry love
No you just have to wait
Love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take
Rock

“TWO OF A KIND” (B-side to 7”, 12” & CDS Gina)
Well, I need you as much as you need me
We belong together naturally
Now our paths are finally crossed
Now we know it's worth the cost
Baby me and you are two of a kind

Well, me and you we’re two of a kind
We feel the same things all of the time
The best gal that I could ever find
Me and you we're two of a kind

The desert higway just keeps rollin' on
The radio is playing our favourite song
Today must be our lucky day
We know our love is here to stay
Baby me and you we're two of a kind

Well, me and you we're two of a kind
We feel the same things all of the time
The best gal that I could ever find
Me and you, well, we're two of a kind

Me and you we're two of a kind
We feel the same things all of the time
The best gal that I could ever find
Me and you we're two of a kind

Well, mee and you we're two of a kind
Two hearts beating right on time
The best gal that I could ever find
Me and you (me and you)
We’re two (we’re two)
Of a kind

“LOOKIN’ OUT MY BACKDOOR” (B-side to 12” Sexy + 17)
Just got home from Illinois, lock the front door, oh boy
Got to sit down, take a rest on the porch
Imagination sets in, pretty soon I'm singin'
Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door

There's a giant doing cartwheels, a statue wearin' high heels
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn
A dinosaur Victrola listening to Buck Owens
Doo, doo, doo, Lookin' out my back door

Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band
Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon, doo doo doo
Wond'rous apparition provided by magician
Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door

Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band
Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon, doo doo doo
Bother me tomorrow, today I'll buy no sorrows
Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door

Forward troubles Illinois, lock the front door, oh boy
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn
Bother me tomorrow, today I'll buy no sorrows
Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door

“THE RACE IS ON” (A-side to Dave Edmunds’ 7” The Race Is On)
I feel tears wellin' up going deep inside like my heart's gonna get broke
And the stab of loneliness sharp and painful that I may never shake
You might say that I was takin' it hard since you broke me off with a call
But don't you wager that I'll hide my sorrow when I may break right down and bawl

Now the race is on and here comes pride up the backstretch
Heartaches going to the inside
My tears are holding back, they're trying not to fall
My heart's out of the running, true love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches and the winner loses all

One day I ventured in love never once suspecting what the final result would be
Now I live in fear of waking up each morning finding that she's gone from me
There's aching pain in my heart for the name of the one that I had to replace
Somebody new came up to win her and I came out in second place

Now the race is on and here comes pride up the backstretch
Heartaches going to the inside
My tears are holding back they're trying not to fall
My heart's out of the running, true love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches and the winner loses all

“CAN’T STAND LOSING YOU” (from the Let’s Go Faster demos)
(* note from me: this song was initially called "Waitin' For Desiree" - see "Brian Setzer Collection 81-88"; lyrics are slightly different. In 1993, this song was recorded by the Spanish band "Los Rebeldes" with lyrics in Spanish too * )
Tornados spin me around
The rain beats on my face
Hurricanes ain’t nothing babe
The time I wake up and quench my thirst
Well, I just can’t believe the pain I’m going through
Well, I can’t stand, I can’t stand losing you

Drinking wine from the loving cup
Before you turned my heart to stone
I share a glass with someone else
Now I’m drinking all alone
All I need is one more chance
To get my love come true
Well, I can’t stand, I can’t stand losing you
I can’t stand losing you

The music is bad enough but it’s the only station I can get
I turn the TV off but you ain’t coming yet

The minutes crawl like hours
The hours feel like days
I thought I wanted everything
But I’ll have it all anyway
Now the nights are long
The dreams are tough
My poor heart is blue
I can’t stand, I can’t stand losing you
I can’t stand, I can’t stand losing you
I can’t stand, I can’t stand losing you
I can’t stand losing you

Eddie Cochran Jeanie jeanie jeanie

Well Jeanie Jeanie Jeanie, come & dance with me
Well I'll teach you every dance from across the sea
Yeah first we'll hop, yeah yeah yeah then we'll bop
Yeah yeah yeah then we'll slop, rock & roll, then do the stroll

Well Jeanie Jeanie Jeanie, got my blue suede shoes
A pink carnation & my black slacks too
Well first we'll hop, yeah yeah yeah then we'll bop
Yeah yeah yeah then we'll slop, rock & roll, then do the stroll

Bridge:
Well, baby baby, you won't have to wait
I'll be ready at 8
I keep a-knockin' at your front door
All the cats are hoppin' at the big 5-4

Jeanie Jeanie Jeanie, when we reach the hall
We'll rock around the clock & really have a ball
Yeah first we'll hop, yeah yeah yeah then we'll bop
Yeah yeah yeah then we'll slop, rock & roll, then do the stroll

yeah, somethin' like that, with Eddie's family I guess. I don't think the Cats earned a lot of money with that song...

Anyway, you're right : this song has probably cost a lot to the Cats...

Oh, that's new to me!
Never heard about that but I don't think that changing the lyrics has cost a lot of troubles. In some shows of the Stray Cats (81-82), Setzer was singing those Jeanie lyrics...

For that reason, some other artist should have taken legal actions against the Stray Cats: see that Wild Saxaphone was written by Brian Setzer but there are no changes in comparison to the original performance by Ray Montrel (I'm not sure if I'm spelling the name correctly) or Fishnet Stockings, Crawl Up & Die or even Everybody Need's Rock & Roll and Gene & Eddie (which is a song made by putting together different bits of different songs...)

I don't have the definitive answer here, not by a long shot, but most of the Stray Cats pressings incorrectly attribute the songwriting credits for Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie. The song was actually written by George Motola and his wife, Ricki Page, in 1956, and was originally recorded from a girl's point of view when it was called "Johnny, Johnny, Johnny." Kay Cee Jones released a version on Imperial. DJ Jimmy Maddin performed gender reassignment on the song, re-naming it Jeannie, Jeannie, Jeannie, and these are the lyrics Eddie covered.

Eddie recorded it on 12 January 1958 with Guybo Smith on bass and the great Earl Palmer on drums, his first of several great recording sessions with Eddie.

I can't find a clear answer on the Stray Cats adaptation, but I also recall some legal action regarding royalties/credits on the song. I don't know how involved the Cochran family was with that, since Eddie didn't write the song. I do know that the credits listed were incorrect on Stray 1 and Built for Speed.

Anyone? Bueller?-billy

There's a live clip of Stray Cats playing "Jeannie, Jeannie, Jeannie" on youtube, and while reading the comments, I discovered this:

radonerocketstar
what is up???My aunt wrote the original version and sued the cats for changing it and recording it...hehe,,yeah..June Page IS my aunt..but the cats were only too happy to settle their differences with her and keep it out of court!!!LIVE ON BOYS..WE LOVE YA!!!!

Gatorrock786
Why would your aunt sue a band that is performing her song? Normally, a songwriter is more than happy to get their tune recorded... since the royalties are paid automatically through licensing organizations like BMI and ASCAP. Besides, how did the Stray Cats change it anyway? This version sounds much the same as Eddie Cochran's orginal.

squirrelnutboy94
on the recording that was on their first album they did change the lyrics
on this they did not though

mikeystrafford
Yeah! I think Setzer may have already been hit by the lawsuit by then - lol. So he changed thelyrics back to the original.
Mikey (Go Skunk)

radonerocketstar
they recorded it without vocal or written permission...so my uncle..the co writer with his wife...aunt june...george motola and june sued...but it wasn't taken all the way to trial...the cats gave a percentage from the built for speed profits..hands were shaken//and all was forgiven...

I don't know, but if it's on the internet, it must be true - right? Razz

As for recording other people's songs, here's what I've been told by NCB (who secure royalties in Scandinavia): As long as you pay a certain percentage to the composer/whoever owns the rights of the song, you're free to record and release it. You can't change the lyrics or music without permission (and certainly not put your own name on it), unless, of course, the composer gives you permission to do so. Say, if I wanted to record and release a Stray Cats song with my own, Norwegian lyrics (which I won't! lol! ), I would have to get permission from their publishing company. Even though the lyrics were mine, I would not get royalties. But if I just wanted to record a Stray Cats song without altering it, the only thing I would have to do was pay a sum of money (a small percentage, calculated from the price, the number of tracks on the album, and how many copies I wanted to print) to NCB. They'd distribute the money to BMI or ASCAP, and Brian (and/or Jim/Lee) would get their share of the money on their next royalty check.

By the way, here's the video:

that's a bit funny but I think the Cats should have acknowledged the writer of the music and then, put themselves as the writers of the lyrics...
That's what Setzer has done with songs like "In The Mood" or "Perioxide Blonde"

Anyway, with money everything is forgiven! We all do have a price

Something tells me they knew the original composers would not approve having "dirty" lyrics take the place of the original ones. Who knows, maybe the Cats thought they'd get away with it...?

When an original work has been copyrighted for a certain number of years after the originator's death (50? 70? Don't remember...), they're free for everybody to use ("public domain"). According to Wikipedia, "In the mood" was recorded as early as 1929 (albeit under a different title), although Glen Miller's version is from 1939. Original lyricist (sp?) Andy Razaf died as late as in 1973, so Brian obviously must have been permitted to write his own lyrics by the publishers.

As for "Peroxide Blonde", I'm sure you know that Brian was encouraged by composer Jumpin' Gene Simmons to complete the song, since he couldn't remember the missing part himself.

A working knowledge of how to get the best results out of Google is very helpful. By searching "stray cats" "eddie cochran" "jeanie" lawsuit I found this reference in a wiki article about entertainment law:

Motola v. EMI America Recordings

(US District Court, District of CA 1984) District Judge Rymer

* Stray Cats received a license for the song “Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie” through the Harry Fox agency
* the plaintiff sued for copyright infringement
* defendant made significant changes to the lyrics

Ct. found that the changes – with references to loud parties, free booze and sex was a perversion of the lyrics

* the rights in a compulsory license:
o recording
o distribution
o a limited right to arrange or adapt the song to adapt the song to suit the performer’s style or interpretation
* BUT the rights cannot be so extensive to allow the song to be “perverted, distorted or travestied”
* you also cannot change the basic melody of the song or alter its fundamental character

Generally, the author has the exclusive right to the copyrightable work Except:

1. Radio Play

* there are two copyrights with a record:
o Sound Recording
+ owner has no exclusive right
+ can be played on radio without infringing
+ this is the record company
o Musical Composition
+ you have to get a license to play this on the radio
+ generally this is through a blanket performing rights society – ASCAP or BMI

1. Section 115 of the Copyright Act (17 USC 115(a)(2)

* once a song has been released, anyone can cover it
* this compels the composer to give them a license
* this is a long and complicated process
* Mechanical License - SO the industry created a private way to do this – they are voluntary and skip all the government bureaucracy
o Harry Fox Agency – biggest firm to do this

I am also fairly certain the lawsuit was mentioned in the Rolling Stone issue in which Stray Cats are the cover story. I have the magazine, I'll double check that later.

Except in the case of Weird Al, he is changing the lyrics, so he still has to get the consent of the author / copyright holder before he can proceed. Thus far, the only artist ever to completely refuse him is the artist formerly known as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince.
