| Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros celebrated his 50th on the weekend at the Mirage in Vegas, with Dave Navarro, Debbie Harry, Tom Morello, Porno for Pyros, members of Cypress Hill and Billy Idol: http://vegasblog.latimes.com/vegas/2009/04/perrypalooza-at-the-mirage-pool.htmlIt's weird to think of Farrell and Setzer as contemporaries. (threadjacking my own thread....) I saw Farrell's creation, Lollapalooza, in 1993 in California - I was 20. The show featured Primus, Alice in Chains, Fishbone, Tool and Rage Against the Machine, among others (but those are the bands I actually wanted to see). I think I enjoyed the first few minutes of the festival. After a full day of a nonstop onslaught of masses of people, loud, distorted noise and very hot sun with no shade, I was miserable, exhausted, fatigued, sunburned - and I'd lost my traveling companion. I distinctly remember falling asleep on the side of a hill for about an hour, despite the unrelenting noise and hot sun. Only time I've ever been THAT tired in my life. It's one of those traumatic experiences that stands out as having shaped my worldview. I have had an intense dislike for throngs of people and festival-type shows ever since (which isn't to say that I haven't gone to any since then, I just don't go unless there's a band that's REALLY important to me, and I don't stay any longer than necessary). It also didn't take long for me to lose interest in "heavy" music - the very next year I rediscovered Setzer and the Cats and I haven't looked back since! Even psychobilly I can only take in small doses. Don't get me wrong, occasionally I still listen to a lot of that stuff from my younger, louder days - but I wouldn't bother going to see it live again, I've gotten picky in my old age! (end threadjack!!) Oh, happy birthday Perry! | |

| Wow. There's a guy who just doesn't seem to be 50 in my mind. I do remember the Lollapalooza shows...I went to the '93 show at a now-defunct venue in the Chicagoland area. Popular Creek Music Theater. Geez, at the time it was about 15 minutes from my house. How convenient! I also went the year that the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam played, I don't remember the year, and I'm too lazy to go look for the ticket stub.
Popular Creek was torn down a couple of years later and turned into a bunch of office buildings. Anyway, the festival was complete madness. It was definitely an experience, but I'd have to agree w/Andi that it was a turn off of festival shows. I don't know what it is, but there is something so much nicer about seeing an artist in a smaller venue with well-behaved fans. Maybe this is just a sign of me getting old and stuck in my ways....
