This is rather unexpected. Brian actually won the Best Pop Instrumental Performance Grammy for Sleepwalk in 1999. Granted, that was a studio version, recorded for the Dirty Boogie album. Still, congrats, Brian.

I see Surfdog has relied on the interweb for it's Grammy count. I thought it was at 10 last year as well, but I had relied on an erroneous source which counted Stray Cats' Best New Artist nomination (which was actually for the American Music Awards). Then I got served, yo:

Tommy Maguire wrote:
Stray Cats were never nominated for a Grammy Award. They were up for an American Music Award in 1983 for "Best New Artist" but did not win. If memory serves, Men At Work won. You may remember that it was Men At Work's album, "Business As Usual" that kept "Built For Speed" out of the #1 spot on the Billboard Album charts prior to the release of "Thriller" which messed things up for months after.

Just the facts m'am,
Tommy

Here's the list I compiled last year:

1999 - Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group - Jump Jive and Wail*

1999 - Best Pop Instrumental Performance - Sleepwalk*

1999 - Best Pop Vocal Album - Dirty Boogie

2001 - Best Pop Instrumental Performance - Caravan*

2004 - Best Pop Instrumental Performance - Nutcracker Suite

2005 - Best Pop Instrumental Performance - Rat Pack Boogie

2007 - Best Pop Instrumental Performance - My Favorite Things

2008 - Best Classical Crossover Album - Wolfgang's Big Night Out

2010 - Best Rock Instrumental Performance - Mr. Surfer Goes Jazzin'

2011 - Best Pop Instrumental Performance - Sleepwalk

*denotes Grammy win

This year's competition:

Flow
Laurie Anderson
Track from: Homeland
[Nonesuch].

Nessun Dorma
Jeff Beck
Track from: Emotion & Commotion
[Rhino].

No Mystery
Stanley Clarke
Track from: The Stanley Clarke Band
[Heads Up International].

Orchestral Intro
Gorillaz
Track from: Plastic Beach
[Virgin Records].

Sleepwalk
The Brian Setzer Orchestra
Track from: Don't Mess With A Big Band
[Surfdog Records].

Hopefully, next year Setzer will score multiple nominations in the instrumental and instrumental album categories with the new album.

Good luck!

Uh, quite curious that he's been nominated again for "Sleepwalk".

Maybe he plays Sleepwalk so well that the committee figures the song is worth 2 Grammys?

No matter what the reason, anytime Mr. Setzer can get a little recognition for his skills, it's a good thing (in my opinion).

Congrats to Jeff Beck on the Grammy win. He had 5 nominations this year (and 2 wins already in the pre-show awards). Hopefully, Brian Setzer will garner similar attention with his upcoming instrumental album.
