I've done my part for the sound of my band. Unfortunately I can't convince my bass player to even try to use a stand up bass. He's a great bass player and I don't want to be too overbearing with him. Is there any "magic bass" pedal that he could use, or any tricks that could be shared on how to make an electric bass sound a little more like a stand up bass?
Fwiw...
My upright bassist was unavailable for the last track on my CD a few yrs back so
had to come up with a close sound using a p-bass in the studio. Here is my suggestion
He has to dump the roundwound strings and get nylon wrapped flat wounds for one
.. this along with using a Boss Bass EQ pedal to remove peak frequencies.
Since I play bass with my fingers, I had to also jam a tightly rolled shop cloth up between the strings and the bridge to kill some sustain.
btw... try that nocturne pedal on an electric bass, the growl is kinda cool. Just built one for Jonny Bowler and Geoff of Hillbilly Casino uses one down on Broadway.
