| I am really enjoying this album. I'm on my third listen today, and it breaks my heart knowing the journey that awaits Glen Campbell and his battle with Alzheimer's disease. Glen has taken some great songs written by others over the years and interpreted them brilliantly, but his songwriting on this final album is especially strong and deeply personal in places. There are a lot of musicians whose singing voices have not aged as well as others, but Glen's vocals are strong and smooth as ever.
While he has been known as much for his great guitar playing, there are beautiful instrumental pieces linking the songs together that have little to do with his prowess as a guitar player, but they're these gorgeous soundscapes that recall some of the Pet-Sounds / Smile-era arrangements of Brian Wilson (whom Glen replaced in the touring version of the Beach Boys in 1964-65). There are lush harmonies on a few tracks, including a wordless vocal in "The Rest is Silence," that links into the closing ballad "There's No Me... Without You."
The Setzer contributions are nice, but all-too brief. It's nice to hear him in used in songs that sound like nothing he'd record himself. Chris Isaak harmonizes with Glen throughout on "In My Arms." It appears Brian Setzer only plays guitar on this track, though I could have sworn I heard him around the 1-minute mark. But it's probably Glen's voice through some kind of vocal filter. It is cool to hear Brian, Dick Dale and Glen Campbell exchange solos.
"There's No Me... Without You" features an odd grouping of guitarists: Glen Campbell, Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Marty Rifkin on pedal steel and dobro (Springsteen's "Tom Joad," "Seeger Sessions," and "Devils and Dust" albums), and Brian Setzer. It's a touching ballad, heavy with keyboards and strings, but the vocals give way to 4 minutes of guitar solos about 2:30 in. I wish I knew the styles of these guitarists better to be able to pick them out, but Setzer fans will definitely recognize him as he gets the honor of closing the song, playing the last guitar notes on the final track of the last Glen Campbell album ever.
It's an outstanding document of a music legend. He faces the twilight of his life bravely and in spite of or because of it, he has produced a remarkable final work.
Thank you, Surfdog Records, and bless you, Glen Campbell

| Rickabilly, could you please check for me if Brian does also backing vocals on "In My Arms"??
In know it's Chris Isaak, but just in case he does them too in a low tone or so...
Thanks! |

| Well, Jon, I could swear I heard Brian take one of the (solo) vocal lines during "In My Arms," but it would seem odd that he would get just that one line while Chris would be relegated to backup vocals. So I don't think Brian sings on it at all. Glen's vocals are running through some kind of effect, and I could have sworn in that one spot, about 1 minute in, the voice sounded like Brian's did in various places on "13." So much so, I thought it was Brian. It looks like I was mistaken.
In fact, looking at the liner notes, Brian Setzer is not listed among the guest vocalists, but Chris Isaak is. Brian is listed first among the guitarists (after Glen) but Chris Isaak is not listed, so it looks like Chris only sings, and Brian only plays guitar.
I should also point out that while Glen Campbell co-wrote most of the songs, there are also songs written by Teddy Thompson, Jakob Dylan, Robert Pollard, and two by Paul Westerberg that are outstanding as well. Glen covered a Replacements song on his 2008 "Meet Glen Campbell" album and Westerberg repaid the favor by writing two of the strongest tracks on the album, "Ghost On the Canvas," and "Any Trouble."
