I think if you got the right gear and know how to use that pedal you can come ridiculously close. I can if I want to. Thing is, its all in the touch of that dang right hand. Im sure some analog delays are better. Im not the one to talk to about that tho

Hi Elvis,
there are lot of different delay/echo pedals discussed here in the Cave and how they work in context of getting Brian´s sound. I couldn´t find that old thread anymore, so here´s a link that has been posted earlier on that subject:
I also upgraded vom the RE-20 (which in comparison to some other pedals like the Danelectro Reel Echo seems like an awesome pedal to me) to the El Capistan. The El Cap has a lot more to offer than the RE-20. Of course, it´s a bit more expensive than the RE-20 which isn´t that cheap either. It´s also important to remeber that the RE-20 is a digital reproduction of the 201 space echo, not the 301 used by Brian.
What I really like about the El Cap are the tweaking options on tape age, tape crinkle, service satus of the machine and so on. The RE-20 offers none of these. I also changed all my pedals to such that provide true bypass, because the older pedals I used sometimes were real tone suckers.
Here´s a video that features the RE-20 in combination with a Nocturne Brain pedal:
Doesn´t sound too bad, or?

Hi Elvis
Another delay/echo pedal you might want to consider is the Line6 DL4

man I had that big green machine on my pedal board for a decade.. now its the El Capistan.. Elvis you need an El Capistan brother.. The thing I didnt like about the Line 6 DL4 and the RE-20 (I had them both) is that the entire guitar signal is being converted to digital using AD-DA converters.. This ends up making the signal thinner and brighter in the Line 6 yet fatter and bloated in the RE-20. I cant fault the RE-20 for this because it successfully emulates the fact that a real RE-20 makes your guitar signal sound the same way due to is build with transistors in the preamp unlike the later RE301 that used opamps..
In anycase where the EL Capistan shines is that it keeps the guitar signal in an analog signal path all the way through the pedal and you can blend the wet signal with the dry analog signal. it is genius

try Carl Martin Red repeat. Great sounding pedal for nice price. Sturdy, reliable.

DM-3 is king of analog echo pedals for sure... but not easy to get often.

That little pink/purple box is amazing! I also had the DL4 for years and years. Great little box, but the size and the volume suck, were things I could do without!
I'd love to get an El Capistan someday. There are other gear things I need to get first!
