Hey the young rebel with normal hair color, eyeliner and a strat!!!

Man these guys fired me up in high school to make my neo-rockabilly band
practice our arses off! .....but the drummer loved Adam Ant and the Alarm too much.
The Bassist loved Journey and ACDC, the rhythm guitarist loved U2...
To this day I CANNOT find a drummer and bassist that are lovestruck mad
about rockabilly and old country.

enjoy, it takes away all the bad feelings Smile

I hear ya. Closest I came was a guy I knew in college that's dad had an upright Bass that he would occasionally bring over to my house, and I'd teach him to bang on the open E and A string while I tried to play over it. He liked Rockabilly but had no real interest in learning how to play the thing. My "real band" at that time was endlessly debating the merits of covering RAB, Springsteen, and Flock of Seaguls in the same set. I made way to many compromises to be allowed to play 20 flight rock and Blue Jean Bop. Our claim to fame was to come in second in a battle of the bands to Big Head Todd and the Monsters. I could have been a contendah.

Sometimes I lurk at rockabillybass.com just to see if their are guys in my area that love the music and are perfectly content slappin out I IV V go cat go for hours on end in my basement. Try searching Rockabilly Bass in Craigslist sometime. Not too many of us out there, unfortunately but plenty of Heart tribute bands to go around oddly.

I'm tellin ya TV, a rockabilly praise band might be your thing.

Not bad for a guy "trying to play some slide"....lol. His trying, well, I wish other guitarists would sound that good just "trying".

That be the ol' Keith Richards tuning. Setzer also uses it on several other tracks. Just to give you an example, two non-Stray Cats ones are Baby Who Would Really Love This Car But Me off of Ignition with the 68CBS trio and Rocky Mountain Shakedown off of Guitar Slinger with the B.S.O.

No, he did not. Actually, he (and this is sort of what he has said over the years in interviews, articles, etc.) explained that after their initial success, he was sort of getting bored with the conventional way of playing chords, and was looking to add more "color" tones via riffs/licks to chords, while simplifying the number of notes ringing (5 open in standard tuning vs. 3 open chord tones in open G tuning) at anytime. Combine that with the old Delta blues slide guitarists who used open tunings that he had listened to via the old Chess Records label, and you can see where he started to explore some of these influences. So, the tuning itself, is traced back to the blues guitarists (i.e. people like Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, etc.) who in turn influenced a country/blues guitarist by the name of Ry Cooder, who in turn, showed the tuning to Richards. What Richards did that was unique with the tuning, is that instead of using it for just slide or open position key of G licks, he used it to play chords. Particularly, that famous move that in standard tuning is a m7 hammer-on (i.e. Doobie Borthers "Listen to the Music"), becomes in open tuning a major chord to suspended 4/6 or I-IV or V-I cadence depending on your perspective. So this legendary sound is all over the Stones' catalog, as you hear it on Brown Sugar, Start Me Up, Honky Tonk Women, and many others.

In summary to quote Mr. Richards on the tuning: "5 strings, 3 notes, 2 fingers, and 1 a......!"

Capt. Jones

P.S. As a side note, trying to play through the Stones catalog, is an adventure in itself in just tuning your guitar, b/c he used other open tunings like E, Em, D, and he also uses a capo with open tunings "Don't Stop" (Open G capo 2 key of A) and without "Memory Motel" (Standard capo 5 key of F). That doesn't even account for the infinite ways that the songs change from year to year and tour to tour, so it's no wonder he brings upwards of 40 guitars on the road, as he could easily go through 5-10 on any given night.
