| You're worried about "Sow" vs. "Sew" on a thread where "Congratulations" is spelled with a second "g"?. Everyone knows it's a "j". [semi-serious mode] I find it very interesting that so many place so much emphasis on the office of President of the United States. That person, whether it would have been John McCain or Barack Obama, can only do so much. Even the Obama supporters cannot blame everything bad that's happened in the past eight years on George W Bush, although it will be nice to finally have a president who could actually be "presidential" here and on the world stage. I sincerely hope that we aren't naive enough to sit back and assume everything's going to be all right just because President-elect Obama will soon be in the White House. And I would say the same thing had McCain been elected. America needs to keep its eyes wide open and get involved. The same enthusiasm and activism that helped get Obama elected needs to sustain beyond the election hangover into the next 4-8 years and beyond. I am not nearly as excited about what Obama might accomplish as President as I am about what we as a country could do if we can reverse our cycle of complacency and self-centeredness. Hold your elected officials accountable, get involved in something for the public good that means something to you. This sort of optimism and energy historically has had a small shelf life of anywhere from a few months to 5 or 6 years, so let's make the most of it. This is especially true for the McCain supporters who fear the country has voted for change merely for the sake of change. Your vigiliance will be important during this time to ensure the government does the best job of representing the entire nation. [/seriousness off] Or is it Congratchulations? Rickaspelly | |

You'll notice 95% of the words in my post had nothing to do with your spelling prowess. I really appreciate that you took the time to vote despite being overseas. It truly is democracy in action. It was early, and I didn't have my coffee yet. Geez. Well, at least you figured out it was sow, and not sow (being a female pig). That could be interesting. hrg This was stated this morning, and is all over the newswires: Speaking in regards to Obama, Rep. John Lewis, a Georgia Democrat and leading player in the civil rights movement with Jackson, said on NBC's "Today" show: "He's going to call on us, I believe, to sacrifice. We all must give up something." IMO: Sacrifice? People be prepared to be taxed like you have never been taxed before. With a democratic controlled house and senate, as well as a democratic president, my prediction is that entitlement programs will spiral out of control and we (and our children for generations to come) will be left footing the bill. Maybe this is the answer to avoiding higher taxes: www.fairtax.org

And unfortunately, it's the 48% who are going to be paying for the free ride of the other 51%. (not exactly....but I'm keeping it simple to make my point.)

| Obama, from his memoir "Dreams From My Father": "To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully ..... The Marxist professors (those who teach the ideals of Karl Marx, writer of the Communist Manifesto) and structural feminists."
As we've learned from The Cuban Missle Crisis, Vietnam, China, North Korea, The U.S.S.R. (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!", Communism doesn't work. And National Socialism (Nazism). Please don't forget our American ideals of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Peace.

| I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I strongly feel that people need to know about this. Chicago media reports that election night was a peaceful celebration. Here's what they're not reporting, and I honestly wish they would. Lots of cops put their lives on the line the night of Nov. 4 and into Nov. 5. Please read the following message, and know that it was sent to me by my brother who was one of the cops that was there. Is this the actions, thoughts and behaviors of people that we are going to have to deal with over the next four years????? It's disgusting! (I've removed emails to help protect privacy) TO EVERYONE This is 100 % true, I was their with NIPAS, the residents of the west side are animals C*****

After a second straight day of hearing and reading the new media gushing about what a peaceful night Chicago had Tuesday night I could not remain silent. Just the facts…
Received from a Chicago Police Officer… similar reports came in from other ghetto districts and my friends at the 911 center:
Liberal media claims there was a calm celebration throughout the city Tuesday night. They either refused or were too scared to cover the ghettos that night. Here's an excerpt from www.secondcitycop.blogspot.com I listened to zone 12 Tuesday night and heard as these things were happening. The coppers did a great job under less than desirable circumstances.

To the media, Here is Chicago's dirty little secret. In the 015 District last nite immediately after the election results, SHOTS FIRED EVERYWHERE! Everybody poured out of their houses like it was a 10-1. Complete rioting for 2+ hours. A car flipped over at 200 N Central, reports of more at Lawler/Division, street signs tore down, traffic signals tore down, city light poles tore down, any signage tore down, and every bottle and bricks that can be found were thrown at the police. Dispatchers were freaking but got out the officers calling for help. We were issued mini fire extinquishers of OC spray and they were used! Anytime through out the night when you drove by you heard somthing like this: "Obama" "Its our country now" "take off the white hoodie" "America is black now" "Now we run it" "You work for me now" over and over again, it was quite comical. Lots of property destroyed. Everybody had thier helmets on and gas masks with OC in one hand and a baton in the other. The earl y cars handed over their cars to midnights like it was a nascar race. You jumped out grabbed your shit and they jumped in and sped away. We taped most windows early on. Most cars were 3 or 4 deep. A lot of help from the outside units. Gas teams called to every major intersection. All in all it was chaos but we stuck together and moved together from corner to corner. It was impossible to take anybody into custody because the bricks and bottles came out of nowhere, as usual. Lots of police vehicles damaged either windows or dents. Young guys wanted some action and they got it. Be safe.

| Scummy people will find any excuse to riot or behave like animals if thats their inclination. The election of Obama was their excuse. It aint his fault , Race aint the fault either if thats whats being hinted at. Scummy people come in al races , skin colors, creeds and social backgrounds. Scum behave like scum. I've spent the first 7 years of my life in New york and New Jersey ,the next 14 years in Ireland , another 8 years in New york , 2 years in London and the last 13 years back in Ireland. I've seen a fair bit of life and scum come in all shades and places. | |

| Kiki,
As per your disclaimer, I did some independent research, although I suppose it wasn't all that rigorous. I just Googled "election night riots", and got 237,000 results. I only looked through the first 4 pages. Of those links, one was to a YouTube video of cops in riot gear standing around while the assembled young people chanted, "Don't tase me, bro!" The rest of the links were to stories posted before election night, reporting that police were preparing for election night rioting.
I think HRG's point is that the TV networks were giving us plenty of video of Oprah and Jesse Jackson with tears in their eyes, but they weren't giving us the whole picture. The image that the rest of the world will see through our media is one of hand-holding and Kum-Bay-Yah, when the reality is that Chicago police had to go into harm's way to try to keep order among an electorate destroying property because they won. American taxpayers will have to pay the bill for the destruction caused by the riot described in HRG's post. And it will be only the first in a long line of bills that the taxpayers will have to pay as a result of Tuesday's election.
Couldn't-keep-my-big-mouth-shut-any-longer-a-billy, Bear85
PS to Vincent: I agree that it wasn't Obama's fault. I just think the media dropped the ball in not showing us what else took place in Chicago that night.

| Because some people rioted and it was under reported does not diminish the overwhelming achievement of this first African-American man's election as our president. My question remains - what's the point? If we get our feathers ruffled every time the police have to do their job to contain human nature at it's worst, we're going to spend a lot of time upset.
If a few folks want to focus on the bad examples of human behavior, that is their privilege, of course. However, I can't take my thoughts away from the enormity of this moment in our nation's history. I am extremely proud of our country, and people all over the world have joined in the celebration.

You say the glass is half empty Kiki, I said no such thing. I was merely pointing out a failing of the media. You don't know me, Kiki, so please allow me to introduce myself. I'm Dave, and I'm an optimist, a "half-full" kind of guy. I'll tell you right up front, I voted proudly and enthusiastically for John McCain. That does not mean that I'm rooting against President-elect Obama. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I wish him and his family well. In terms of policy, though, I hope he doesn't get his way on everything. I don't think he'll be successful in turning America into a socialist country - there will be too much opposition to that (...he said, optimistically!) , Bear85

| Well, Hi Dave. I'm sorry you thought I was addressing you personally. My remark was meant for the collective, no one individual in particular.
Regardless of who you voted for you can be proud of your country's achievement. This is a watershed moment in American history; one that has been very long in coming.
The reason that any kind of rioting or violence was under reported on election night is because it simply wasn't the story. No network or paper wanted to be focused on that sort pedestrian issue while history was unfolding on the world stage. I'm sure in the days and weeks to come it will be written about, but in the moment it simply wasn't the main story.

The point is that these people who were rioting claim to be supporters of President-elect Obama. That's what bothers me. I understand the historical significance of Obama winning the election, but what I don't understand is the need of some of his claimed supporters to riot in celebration of his victory. I do not understand the general disrespect of some of his claimed supporters seem to have for others and their property. It all seems so vacuous.

I don't want to focus on the bad examples of human behavior, but I do want people to be aware of it, and to be aware of the one-sided reporting that is occurring in our main stream media. I am thrilled to have witnessed this time in history, but I am not proud of the way some of my fellow countrymen are behaving, and how some of the news outlets are reporting, or not reporting it.
You say the glass is half empty; I say it's half full. No, make that overflowing! Kiki, I am encouraged by your optimism. I just want people to know that what they are hearing, reading, or listening to in our media may not reflect the entire situation. All I ask, all I hope for, is unbiased reporting from our media outlets. As our country enters this time of "change" it will become increasingly more important that we are informed of what is going on around us.
Take care, hrg
p.s. So what kind of dog do you think will wind up being our nation's "first dog"?

| But isn't that always the case? If anybody ever wants to know what's really happening in our world, they had better do the research themselves.
Like I said before, the story on election night simply wasn't about any peripheral violence or rioting or anything like that. The story was that our nation had crossed some very, very difficult barriers and come together in a powerful way to elect an African-American president for the first time in our history. That was the story.

I think I heard somewhere they're considering a golden doodle (cross between a golden retriever and poodle).
Now for a positive comment about the guy I didn't vote for, relating to the dog thing:
I didn't see the video, but apparently when asked, Obama said the dog would be "a purebred, not a mutt like me." When I read that phrase, "mutt like me" my first thought was, "Oh, there are a lot of people who aren't going to like that!" But the more I thought about it, I came to decide that if he's that comfortable with himself to make an offhand remark like that, maybe it's a sign that America will stop being so conscious of race. Maybe it won't be such a big deal anymore - maybe we can stop being hyphenated-Americans, which would be a great thing!
Here's hoping, Bear85 | |

FrenchyCat FrenchyCat, that's just campaign rhetoric. Obama was called a socialist, communist, and a marxist. Did I leave anything out? It's absurd that politicians throw that kind of junk out there; it's even more absurd that people fall for it. There are some great books that examine presidential campaign tactics and strategies going back to the beginning (George Washington). Fascinating reading, but a little silly that this is what elections always devolve into. It really boggles my mind that every election cycle the people (on either side) are swayed by this nonsense. I guess if it didn't work, politicians wouldn't do it.
