I,ve been emailing back and forth with my relatives in the US , all who voted for John McCain. And every one of them sited his "socialism". I wish they really knew what socialists were.....they're not in government here in Ireland ,Thank God. And lots of European countries have major socialist parties. Obama aint no socialist ,that accusation is just scare mongering and unfortunately people fall for it. Maybe his presidency wont live up to the hype ,hopefully it will. Things had to change ,I dont think McCain was going to do that. And God forbid, anything happen to him while in office and Sarah P. took charge.
Obama needs to do a few things ;
1 .obviously the messed up economy will be the first priority and let's hope he and his guys are up to the task
2. militarily the US is all over the place
since 9/11 ,over 4,000 US troops have died as well as British ,Polish troops. Over 600,000 Iraqis are dead and they certainly weren't all raving Al Queda freaks. The situation in Afghanistan is probably no better.
Yet theres people bent on taking on Iran as well ? ? ? ?

There had to be a change in Washington ,America deserves it and needs it.
I am proud of the fact that I was born in America even though I've spent more than half my life in Ireland. I've still got a touch of my American accent. But the lack of respect for the US ( thats not how I feel) in the last few years is unreal and the fact that that major hurdle of race has been crossed is going to stand to America. In conversations with people here ,they are delighted that America is finally getting rid of that millstone around its neck.
None of this has anything to do with Setzer or Rock n' Roll so I've said enough.

You have a uniquely interesting perspective that I wish more "Americans" could be exposed to. Claims of socialism and marxism and the like get thrown around during a campaign and people actually believe it. However, they believe it because they want to believe it not because they know what it means or care to learn. I think that only time will prove them wrong, so we'll just have to wait. No amount of arguing about it will change stubborn ignorance.

I am so proud of my country at this moment! It is a most wonderful thing to witness.

The day after the election we spent the day at Disney World to relax and take in the magnitude of what just happened. On the way down a truck was behind us at a stop light and started honking furiously. I couldn't move forward because the light was red and didn't know if it was even me he was honking at. As we got onto the highway and had traveled a couple of miles, the truck pulled alongside and there was a jubilant black man at the wheel honking and waving. I then realized that it was my Obama sticker on the rear window that he was celebrating! That was the most joyous moment you could imagine!

No amount of criticism or nitpicking or scurilous comments is (or can) take away from the enormity of this election and what it means for our country.

This president won't be perfect, no president is, but, based on the brilliant campaign he ran, I have hope for our nation.

I guess you might say that Sarah Palin got a dose of what a "community organizer" can do, no?

Let me add one more comment... If Obama's critics are really interested in finding out what makes this man tick; about learning who he really is, I recommend reading his two books. One was written in 1995 when he was president of the Harvard Law Review - Dreams From My Father. The other, The Audacity of Hope, was written 2 years ago. If anyone takes the time to do this instead of regurgitating lies that were ladelled out during the campaign, I think they will come away with a completely different impression of our new president.

I hope his "pastor" doesn't make a surprise appearance. That "man of God" is just full of love.

Obama, from his memoir "Dreams From My Father": "To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully ..... The Marxist professors (those who teach the ideals of Karl Marx, writer of the Communist Manifesto) and structural feminists."

As we've learned from The Cuban Missle Crisis, Vietnam, China, North Korea, The U.S.S.R. (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!", Communism doesn't work. And National Socialism (Nazism). Please don't forget our American ideals of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Peace.

Yep. Everyone should read his book "Dreams From My Father". Read it carefully. Know who this man is who will be our next president. Find out who funded his college education. Find out who funded his run for presidency. Learn about the pastor of the church that he was involved in for 20+ years. Learn about who is friends and associates are. Research the people who he is choosing to be his closest advisers. Learn about ACORN and it's role in the elections. Look at his record in the Senate. Read about the proposed executive orders that he will implement within his first days in office. Educate yourself on the various lawsuits that are pending against him.

I wish him well in his presidency, but I also believe in the power and authority of our Constitution.

Take care,
HRG

Just putting it out there.

Kid.

Hey Kid,
The "d" originally came from the Labradoodle (which is a mixed breed dog of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle). When the Goldendoodle was named, they kept the "d" from the Labradoodle and carried it over to the Goldendoodle. At least this is what I have been told...

So, I can only imagine what doodle means over in Australia. Care to educate the rest of the world?

If anyone is interested in the truth behind the smears you can click here http://www.fightthesmears.com/?source=sem-pm-fts-fts-search-us&gclid=COGM_t7QlZYCFSCysgodNFCwFg

I'm not going to get into a back and forth with you, hrg, about Obama. The fact is that he IS the president-elect and will be our next president. So, continuing to perpetuate fear mongering about him is of little use at this point.

Obama is not technically the President-Elect until the Electoral College votes on December 15th and the vote is ratified by Congress on Jan. 6, 2009.

I disagree with your statement about perpetuating fear mongering. When did raising valid questions and discussing both sides of an issue become fear mongering?

Have a great day,
HRG

Like I said before, I'm not going to get into a back and forth with you about Obama.

The name of this thread was "Congratulations" (or a variant of that...). The whole world is celebrating this election; most of our country is celebrating this election; I just don't understand why you want to make a stink about the president elect (yes, that's what he's called now) in a thread full of well wishes. This isn't like you, hrg, you are usually so positive.

I'm sorry you feel this way, but you are in a global minority. Why not be gracious about this and let it go. No one is trashing your candidate; it's not necessary to carry on the campaign after the election is over is it? I don't think there's anything to be gained by this discussion.

The 2008 election was going to be historic no matter whether the Dem's or Rep's took office. There would have been....I'm sorry...should have been global celebration regardless of who the victor was.
One thing we can all agree on is that the President-Elect has their work cut out for them over the next four years. And with this being an election of historic value, I think it's fair to assume every decision from 1/20/09 forward will be scrutinized in the press over the next 4 years.

While we're at it, I know there was much buzz about Michelle Obama's election night dress. Who paid for that dress? Or does it not matter since Obama won? Just wondering how that worked? What about McCain's suits? Who paid for those? How much did they cost? Hey, if we're going to question one candidate, let's be fair and open the book on them all.

It appears that any questioning of our new president is considered "being negative" according to Kiki. As far as Hot Rod Girl being in the "global minority". So what? We all still have the right to voice our opinions whether we are in the minority or not. George Bush won the last election by a majority and the minority didn't stop voicing their opinions (understatement).

Here's something positive. Now that Obama has been elected and George Bush is out maybe those on the left will shutup and quit their whining for the next 4 years.

I eagerly await Kiki's next lecture.

Easy there, T. Talk about the leader looking "road weary" could get you banned from...

Ono I didn't! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

So ya want a lecture, Penguin? Discussions of religion, morality, politics never play out well around here. I believe it was a politically-charged discussion that killed one version of an official message board back in 2001.

Most of us come here or entertainment, information, fellowship, and yes, the occasionally spirited debate, usually on things related to music.

I'm not saying being involved in the political process before and especially after the elections isn't important. But those of us who have been visiting this forum for years and have seen various, less important drama-laden discussions drive people away from here, aren't all that enthused about divisive, grass-roots political discussions taking hold here.

This site has become a bit of a release for those of us who wish to escape other elements of our lives, even for a few minutes. If I wanted to get in the middle of right v left politics, I would turn on talk radio or the so-called news channels.

Certainly, the US Presidential Election was an historic event that was probably worth mentioning here. But it seems this thread is heading down a path from which nothing positive can come. Take it to another website.

Can we let this go?

As a sign of unity, I'll answer my own question with snippets from each party's tired rhetoric:

My friends, yes we can!

Give peace a chance-a-billy
