I lived in temecula valley for 7 years and developed a real palate
for good wine and all the #$%^ involved with how a good wine is
produced. At the same time I refuse to pay stupid prices for a bottle
of wine when a good 12 pack of New Castle doesnt exceed $12..

All to say I was stunned when I watched the video "bottle shock" about the story of california wines beating out french wines in 76 and ushering
in a new era in global wine attention, only to find out that in order to
taste this wine in the movie; Chateau Montelena, was going to cost me
$125 a bottle. BULLSH$T.. I'll enjoy my $10 of Oz yellow tail reserve cabernet or my $7 bottle of temecula valley Muscat Canelli or temecula
Filsinger Cabernet...

discuss...

HeyTV,
I love my wine as well. I live in South Australia, premier wine state. We get spoilt for choice, and being in the industry, i get great oppurtunity to pick up premium wines at a cheaper rate. And end of year/stock sales. For AUS$15+, I get exceptinal stuff! Price does make a difference, but in my opinion once you go past AUS$50, there's not that much difference to justify the price.
If ya come down, I may even crack a Grange Hermitage, look that up!

Wine is one of my passions since a long time ago. I'm really glad that TV open a (bottle ?) topic about it.
I'm french... And it means a lot about wines. Burgundies are, from far, my favourites in white and in red.
Sometimes I pay a lot and, often, I have to wait 10-15 years before tasting !
My cellar counts more than 300 bottles. So, if one day you come to France, do not hesitate : contact me and we'll have a great tasting.
I taste, more or less, 400 wines each year (411 in 2008).

wow... I guess I am not thaaat much of a wine snob. I love wine for sure, but no way in hell would I ever ever EVER pay more than $25 a bottle.
..but I would pay $ for a good single malt scotch. Just spent a few bucks on a bottle of Laphroaig Islay single malt. Smile more of a late night
sipping ordeal with a good dominican cigar.

With wine its more about finding interesting varietals from smallish vineyards by people who have sacrificed greatly to establish their
art. Thats the "snobby" part that attracts the romantic side of my
musicians muse.

BUT.. I'm all for visiting y'all and wine tasting! Before my wife and I had
children, we spent some time in napa during harvest time, enjoying the smell of wine in the air and drinking some goooood muscat desert wines.

In Temecula Valley, there is a retired surgeon who supposedly brought over the vines of his father, that were stolen by the nazi's in germany and has built up this little vineyard in Temecula we'd visit. He heralds his Cabernet as the trophy grape from his grandfather. You should
somehow get a bottle. Its called FILSINGER cabernet old vine reserve..
INCREDIBLE with a good medium rare Tri-tip and baked potato!!

ps. Kooniga hills by Penfold runs $12 a bottle.. my latest bargain find is
Friar Brothers Shiraz for $18. I start getting scared spending more than that since it would mean I dont get to buy a 12 pack of Beer come pay day. Smile The mortgage payment sez we all practice moderation Smile

Well when you tour Down Under, I'll bring ya on a Winery Tour. The beauty about where I live is that you have 3 premium wine regions (Adelaide Hills, Barrossa and McLaren Vale) literally 1/2 and hour away from home. And another (Padthaway) a few hours away.
That goes out to all of the board members.

Thanks a lot Pete, really.

Yesterday, while the match between Wales versus England (Six Nations Rugby tournament) I've tasted 2 white burgundies bottles : a Meursault 2000 & a Corton Charlemagne 1991 (the one on my actual avatar). It was pure poetry, absolutely fantastics, probably better because the Welsh Red Devils won Wink
No regret for the $150.

ever since moving into my own house, I've been getting into wine. Maybe it's the new thing for younger people, but if there is a get-together, a few bottles of wine are usually shared amongst the group.

I think the only couple of wines that I've tried that I did not like, but still stomached to be nice were a certain merlot (tasted like olives to me) and a white that was really sour. I forgot the name of it.

There is a vineyard here about 10-15 minutes south of Omaha, Called Soaring Wings. It's a pretty place, I went to a wedding reception there a few years back, and the wine was pretty good, Winter White being the favorite. I think I need to try some of their reds someday...only 5 minutes from where I work Smile.

Beer is the drink of choice for me, especially after disccovering there was more out there than just Bud, Miller, and busch light...

Harp is one of my favorite beers. the "irish" pub up the street from my house has it on tap. I always over look Smithwicks, but when I do remember it, it never does me wrong. I actually turned my family on to Blue Moon, I think it was the beer that started me down the road of the better beers out there. Can't deny Corona, though I usually prefer Dos Equis Amber. My favorite stuff is Nut Brown Ale...I've only been able to get it at the bars by my house...not sure if it's a local brewed beer, but it's probably one of the best beers I've ever tasted. When I get it, I'm like a six year old with their first soda. If it was priced a little bit less, I could have a problem Smile

I think Ive heard of Arrogant bastard ale, I'll have to try that out. I've seen where Smithwicks and Guiness are half and half as a drink, but not Harp...either way sounds like the beer of choice for St. Patty's day. It's a shame it's a on a tuesday this year.
