After Formula One (hey, there is a race sunday in Germany) & Wimbledon (it's done, R. Federer is number one ), I would like to open a forum dedicated to the Tour de France. This year could be very exciting with the L. Armstrong come back (at 37 !), C. Sastre (the 2008 winner) and A. Contador, the young spanish (2007 winner) in the same team that Armstrong... And other guys like the Schlek brothers, C. Evans, O. Pereiro (2006 winner)... Tuesday, Armstrong has "trapped" all the other favorites. He is almost in yellow but the race has just begun and it's far from being finished...

Let's also shout for Mark Cavendish. He's young, but won a few stages last year, and already has some under his belt for this tour. I don't think he's in the hunt for yellow, as he is more of a sprinter...
He's from my little Island here, and used to ballroom dance with my girlfriend many years ago (before cycling became his sport of choice!)
Go for it, Cav!!

Don't want to sound as a patriotits, something that I think I am not but Astana team has clearly favoured Amrstrong when the leader is Contador... the members of the team (by team orders) led Contador in a very bad position just to help Lance, which I think it's not fair... if there are 2 leaders, half the team for each one, don't you think??
Nonetheless, I am not a big cyclying fan, so that I'm not following the tour very much. Since a few years ago, when all that dopping issue saw the light, cyclying has lost its prestige quite heavily and it doesnt get the same interest as some years ago... at least that's how I see it

Yes, I think you are right Jon. It clearly what happened this day. Friday (the Tour will be in Spain !), there is a very hard race with the finished line at 2 200 M !!!

I believe the race ends today in Barcelona... not a 100% sure though.
The only way for Armstrong to beat Contador is if Contador fells off the bike, or if the whole team treats him as a stranger.
If the team director is smart enough, he should make the whole team work for Contador, and they probably will have at the end of the Tour de France, Contador as the winner of the race, and Lance Armstrong as the 2nd or 3rd.
If they start an internal war between Contador and Lance, they may not even get the yellow shirt in the end.

Yes David, it's one of the question this year : the attitude of Astana's team between Armstrong & Contador. Maybe tomorrow we'll see more clear because the race is going to be hard...

we will see what are the team´s orders for tomorrow.....

The current internal power struggle inside of Astana reminds me of Hinault/ Lemond battles of 1985/86. Those were great races to watch, this should be epic.

Agreed with you Vic, I think that's a good comparison. It must be hard for the team to chose between the "old" (who won the Tour seven times) and the "young" (2007 winner) and actually one of the best in the world and the favorite in almost all pronostics... Officially, Contador is the leader BUT, as Jon & David said, monday, some guys of the team help Armstrong to escape while Contador was in a bad position so... ? Today, no one will "win" the Tour but probably some guys among the "bigs" will lose it.
Subject: Re: Tour de France 2009 Fri Jul 10, 2009 9:04 am
Today´s race just finished.
Contador demonstrated that he doesn´t need nobody´s help when going up hill.
If he had jumped out the group a couple kilometers earlier, he should be the new leader of the race.... now he is second, only for 6 seconds.... and passed Armstrong for two.
Good race today.
We will have to wait for other mountains to see more "war".

Fantastic final today ! A youg french won the race and Contador has sent a message to all the "bigs" : I am the Boss. As David said, just a little regret : if he has jumped just a little earlier, he could be in yellow. Can't wait until tomorrow...

Nice end of the race today as well..... Luis Leon, a spanish cyclist, won in the last meter of the track.... amazing sprint!!!!

L.L. Sanchez made a very clever race and a good operation at the general rank. It'a pity the mountains were so far from the finish line ! And it will be the same today : the Tourmalet is at more than 70 km from the end ! It's stupid.

A-M-E-N!
The Tourmalet should be at the finish line, like it was before, when Induráin, Armstrong, Ciapucci, Bugno and some others were racing....

What a memory when Claudio "Il Diablo" Chiappucci tried to escape from Miguel "Le Grand d'Espagne" Indurain ! That was really hot RACE with finish on top of mountain (Sestrières, Alped'Huez, Tourmalet...)
Subject: Re: Tour de France 2009 Fri Jul 17, 2009 10:08 pm
Yep,Indurain was great, mais por moi Le Tour 1989 was the most exciting I have ever seen. I was just youtubing some of the old stuff and that back and forth between Lemond and Fignon was amazing. I heard Fignon is battleing cancer, but I can't find much info about it en anglais(je ne parle pas francais). What do you guys know of it?
Found this one and it was good to see them together looking like old friends. Any help on a translation?
And for the record,my predictions have so far been wrong. 2009 is the most boring, negative race I've ever seen. I've seen catagory 4 womens office park criterium racing that was more interesting.

Hello Vic, I'm going to try to answer you. First, yes, Laurent Fignon is battleing cancer but he seems not too bad since he comments everyday the (boring) Tour 2009 on french TV. About the youtube video now. It's about the Tour 1989, one of the more undecided as Greg won the last day for... 8 seconds ! Greg and Laurent said that it's old time memory now and, when they meet each other, they prefer talking about golf than about the Tour 1989 (...this is said by Greg, not Laurent ). So the "fight" is over now and they are good friends. At the beginning of the video, as Laurent comments the Tour on TV, Greg said : "When I heard french TV, I said to myself : I know that voice but who is it ?..." Nice video about a great vintage Tour...
Subject: Re: Tour de France 2009 Sat Jul 18, 2009 1:22 am
Sorry to hear about Fignon and his cancer.... hope he is doing better as of today. I had no idea.
Those years were the great ones that made Le Tour a big race.... thanks to all those racers in the 80´s and early 90´s, we all have the passion for the race that we have.
Let´s hope the last week of the Tour is more exciting than the previous ones, which have been kind of boring this year.
