Zut Alors! Je ne comprends pas pingo la ponge sur la table! ( translation: sheeze dude, I just dont understand badminton)
TV, you should leave your translator away or maybe go back to school and learn french language! That's finally a good idea, and you'll see we don't blame, hurt or insult anybody here. Don't want to go to school? OK, Budgie found the solution: a french moderator can be the answer... Think about it, and ask the chief
FC c'mon now ...tongue in cheek comedy poking fun that I neither fully grasp foreign language or sports not played with cleats. In anycase... I dont think they teach Verlan 'round these parts. I learned conversational french in high school and the formal reading and writing at LLU in riverside but that was late 83-85' ...a zillion yrs ago.

hmmm. Putain n., excl. Roughly equivalent to 'merde' (sh$t)when used as an exclamation. As a name, old form for 'pute' (whore). 'Putain' is the closest equivalent to the English 'f$ck' (see note on 'f$ck').pew-tAÑ

| Out of the hundreds of posts on the French Movie Buffs thread, (calling it a "topic" is silly, because there were literally dozens of topics discussed in the "French Embassy") the vast majority of them were harmless and I'm certain held great interest for those participating.
But occasionally, there were comments that wouldn't have been tolerated in English and should not be tolerated in French, either. Bitterness towards Mrs. Setzer, jealousies and petty comments regarding other members on the board... it was such a small, almost non-existent part of the conversation, but it was still there. Thus, the need for moderation, just like any other thread on this message board. The owner and moderators aren't nearly as interested in being "politically correct" (an early topic on that thread - which was supposed to be about Mack the Knife) as they are in preserving good will and civil discourse. Overt rudeness and disrespect really drag this forum down, and have, on occasion, overshadowed the kindness and decency that usually prevails here.
Just because it's hiding in a 500-post thread doesn't mean it's not there. That thread was not all about history, art, and French cuisine. But overall, it was harmless, and held my interest the few times I visited.
All Tavo was doing was getting input from the owner of this forum as to what kind of moderation should be done regarding languages other than English. It's not just about protecting members from personal attacks. He also wants to avoid taking action against someone for something that he may have translated wrong, and keep this the positive community it has mostly been for nearly a decade - maybe longer.
I find it ironic that people are using "rockabilly retards" to describe this situation, when that phrase was used by Setzer to describe those who are clique-ish and exclusionary. The very notion of a thread where a select few seek refuge in a language foreign to 95% of the members is exclusionary. And then a few folks from the "French Embassy" make matters worse by creating a sarcastic thread mocking those who find a sense of community in sharing the little things that make them happy. Exclusionary mean-spiritedness and sarcasm. Not helping.
As much as the "Movie Buffs" thread was a wandering conversation devoted to a variety of subjects, wouldn't it have been better served in a chat room than a message board?
I wish I had a solution. I think there is a lot of overreaction on both sides of the issue. I think for many people far more sensible than I, the solution whenever this kind of petty bickering arises is to walk away from the forum. We've certainly lost a lot of thoughtful, funny, and informative people through the years over stupid converations that drag on because people feel the need to have the last word.
October 13th can't get here soon enough!

| That is exactly it.. thanks for elaborating so eloquently. Ultimately I just cannot placate attitudes no matter what I do or dont do for any forum member.. I can only moderate what goes on and follow the guidelines as formatted by the Owner/operator/creator of HoodooVdooDoolounge.com.
I too am sometimes guilty of being overpassionate in some threads because I am first and foremost an HDVDL member and uber setzer fan..but when I constantly have to feel like a babysitter to simpleton jabs at Brian's Wife, constant barrages of 4 letter words, and threats that "no matter how many times we ban someone for misconduct that they will just re-register 100 times"......it just wears you down. I have to deal with junk like that having two pre-adolescent children of my own to take care of... sigh...
All to say.. just follow the rules of the forum and perhaps take into great consideration that we are all the same really. We want to be loved, respected and belong.. if it wasnt true we wouldnt waste our time drinking from the life experiences we gather from one another here.

| I understand your points, Mr Moderator... but thing is that after loads of pages written in French, you came up with this when you were really aware of the French language being used. Where is tolerance towards our French community when they opened a topic in French with no intention of offending anyone and when they are dealing with cinema??? Had you warned them from the very first post, this wouldn't have arisen.
And again to you Mr Moderator... yes, I am one of those who sometime sucks and sometimes I say things that I shouldn't say here, but when someone is rude to me (I still remember a strong "go fuck yourself" by Lonesome Cat from Germany without having said anything), where are you??
Guitarmaniac, the reason why I am still here is because of my passion to Setzer's music but truth is that imho, sometimes this sucks when it comes to silly issues concerning a discussion in French that's been going on for ages and now, all of a sudden is locked. And what it does suck even more is that Mandy (the owner) hasn't said anything against that French conversation apart from delagating to the moderators... that's why I'm still here |

Policy is always open to new legislation by the policy creator, and acting in behalf of the group as a whole I submitted this conundrum to said Policy originator.. the Boss said keep it locked - Slim Jon Phantom wrote:

I tried to find the statement when you told me about it and didnt see it, had you been more specific I would have immediately removed it.

Even if she made a "presidential address" with specifics you would still insist your point. You are indeed entitled to your point but this is by and large an English audience and if you need to converse in languages other than english..then you are welcome to exercise that in other forums that operate in that realm. This one is in english and that how Mandi wishes it to be. To this I humbly must say..... End of debate

Rick's intervention was long, as always, and interesting, as often (for me). But the only thing I remember (the rest is only bla-bla, sorry Rick) is we had some words about Brian's wife that don't suit a lot of you. And that's THE problem, not the french language (after more than an hundred pages, it's time to wake up, dear moderator). Let me say we said no insult, just our opinion about Julie's influences on Brian (music, clothes...). And that's one subject among hundreds. Last thing: our "embassy" is open to everybody and some of you came to take part of our conversation. In french! Because they wanted to... So what do we have: censorship, hypocrisis, maybe lies, politically correct attitude.... well, the french community ain't so bad, whatever it may say or write! FC

| Hey my french friends, don´t you think you overact a bit? This is not the moment where freedom dies or freedom of speech is fade away.. Boardowner want to know what we talk and we (all) have to respect this. I know french people are very proud of their country and language and i even respect this. I don`t care of german, french, spain or US, only if people are ok or not.
And to be honest, some quotes of spanish Jon means in real life starting a fight. Are you such a fighter, Jon? (And the boardmoderator reacts cool.)
So imho it would be great if everybody comes down. The world has bigger problems. Sorry, if my english is not perfect but i hope everybody understand my words.
