| forgive me if im on the wrong forum but ive gotta mention my other favourite noise after setzer's collossal guitar tone - Mark Winchesters bass sound. Ive just been watching this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP0ptW0b1RMWhen I listen to spaz hatton and lee rocker, altho I love and respect them loads, I havent heard them or anyone come close to the sound Mark Winchester gets from his bass and it sounds massive yet hes managed to have kept that natural double bass sound which most other bass players sacrifice in order to get the volume e.g using manetic pickups/ stuffing the f holes/ adding sound posts, pouring concrete inside the body or whatever. And he plays i so effortlessly! - Mark Winchester - respect. | |

| I totally agree, Mark Winchester's awesome! If there's a chance to see Brian's 68 Comeback Special again, I'd pay good money to be there. As far as I'm concerned, Kevin Smith and Mark share the "throne" of rockabilly slap bass, both when it comes to tone and technique. And at the risk of derailing the thread, here's Kevin with High Noon from Art Fein's Poker Party: Beaumont BoogieSome pretty cool drag triplets around 2:00... | |

| yeh he's good -very good! ace technique but tonewise most of his sound is the click off the neck piezo wheras Mark Winchester's sound seems to be off the strings-full and round- and I think hes only using an Underwood bridge piezo, also hes competing with Setzer AND an orchestra. Sounds to me like his sound has been 'nocturned'! nice chattin to ya | |

| Actually Kevin Smith doesn't use a fingerboard pickup. just an underwood in the bridge, same as Mark W. but in the video in question, Kevin is playing acoustic with just a vocal mike on the f-hole. As for Mark keeping up with the orchestra, it's all about the SVT he played through and a good front of house engineer. | |

| SVT amp? I thought something like Ampeg was a choise for slappers. Then again, I play guitar. Maybe someone can enlighten me what gear these guys use so that I could brag about stuff for our bass players, hehehe... | |

| @bigbassape do you remember his string set up again? I got the 51'Kay 3/4 bass and now the underwood pkup for my woman. now i think its time to step up to the Gut & hybrid mix.. what' was he running on the fretboard
@Booty ..great topic, I wanna learn more. the sound of winchester is totally stunning to me, Vintage mojo but a modern barnstormer. I get so tired of just feeling the upright flapping my pants (like my bassist's style), I want to hear that instruments deep rich low mids too.. I think Mingus should haunt the tone of all upright bassist.

| Ossi -svt IS Ampeg - but you can choose 'svt pro' which is the valve version
re - FOH sound engineers: they obviously have ultimate control of the bass sound at big gigs, but Mark Winchester must have an awesome sound at source which the sound man can do a lot with, cos live, he always comes over really well. Ive heard this not only on official dvd's and bootleg dvd's but on 2 occasions I saw the 68 CBS in Dublin and London. Lee Rocker doesnt even go for that type of sound cos he uses steel strings with magnetic pickups and I can hardly even hear Spaz Hatton on that BSO xmas dvd!
All I know about Mark Winchester is that he uses a 1941 Kay with Thomastik Dominant E an A strings and Kaplan Golden Spiral D and G strings, some sort of Ampeg rig and that hes sh*t hot! | |
