Friday night the Dave and Deke Combo (Dave Stuckey and Deke Dickerson) and the Bedbreakers, local a rhythm and blues band that broke up 10 years ago, played a fantastic gig here in San Diego. Check out my review.
I know we've talked about Deke before... the guy is brilliant on guitar, and a lot of fun live. He told the story of driving through some little town in the Carolinas and stopping at WalMart, looking in the phone book and calling up Joe Bennett of the Sparkletones to tell him what a fan he was. Joe ended up coming down to the WalMart to chat with Deke.
He also talked of how guitarist Buddy Merrill (best known from the Lawrence Welk show) gave him his guitar, but only if he promised to practice! Here's the guitar in question:

Deke is so flippin' awesome I can hardly stand it. I saw him about a year ago at Oneida in Green Bay, and the joint was jumpin' - he's got a bit of a following there.
Last fall, I was driving by the Chamber of Commerce here in Podunk, where their message board lists local events. Another local casino had Deke coming in - if I had driven by 10 seconds sooner, I would have missed the message!
So I go out there the second night (Saturday) and I am not kidding you...I was the SIXTH person in the audience. I felt really bad for the guy - but he still put on a great show, despite the somewhat dismal turnout.
I think I'm the only guy in my whole county who likes the music I like!
Almost forgot - thanks for the pics, Andi!

I saw them in Helsinki two months ago, they played together with Lester Peabosy(FI), one of the better gigs I've witnessed. Fun fun fun!

Deke is brilliant! I saw him here in Spain 2 or 3 times a few years ago and, with Setzer's permission, he's one of the most talented rockabilly guitar players that the world has ever seen. He's also a wonderful singer and better person.

Here's video from the show I was at, though I didn't shoot it. So much fun.

Deke's an all around amazing person. I caught him give a lecture about the history of the electric guitar...the man knows his stuff! The night before he did a solo set for about 20-25 people at a history museum, which I was also fortunate enough to attend. His love of roots music runs deep...with that effin' stuff almost too deep!
