Boz Boorer is the featured guest on BBC2's Jools Holland programme this week. On the second half of the show, Jools interviews Boz and plays tracks from his latest album, Miss Pearl. At about 48 minutes into the program, the Tommy Maguire-Boz Boorer composition B-29 (Dropping Bombs on You Heart) receives its world broadcast premiere. In addition to Boz raving about Tommy's lyric, Jools has high praise for the song, noting that his feet moved so much that he scooted his chair several feet across the studio. It is clearly the highlight of the show.
Well done, Mr. Maguire!
The program aired tonight, but you can listen to it for another six days by clicking on THIS LINK, scrolling down to Jools Holland and clicking on the "Listen to latest show" button.
If you feel inclined to fast-forward past some great Etta James, Mahaila Jackson, Fats Waller, and Dr. John tracks, you'll miss some great music, but the Boz Boorer portion starts about 32 minutes in.
Enjoy!

I got home from work, just in time. Well 10 minutes or so. I went up stairs to my room. My tuner allready on radio 2. i got out a blank audio cd-r,diffrent to the one's used in computers. Thought i would record the show for Tommy. But guess,i *ucked something up as i did'nt record Sorry Tommy.
The music as mentioned was great. Jooles asked, how he met Tommy. Thought Boz, got a bit tongue tied with his answer. Em, is there a sore point here, about Tommy writing a song, for Boz, and doing Dibbs web site?
But, it was just nice to hear Tommy get a mention
Wee Mark.

Nah, Boz and T get along famously. Boz probably didn't want to get into talking about Setzer, as the question was about Tommy, and that was his moment to shine.
Check the programme out while you still can. I'm not sure if it will archive after this week.

Rick that is what i meant, did'nt want to bring Brian, into the subject!
But, Boz came over as a decent guy, very down to earth. The show was awsome, did'nt remember how good my Naim tuner was. I have a 5 element aerial up on the roof. Think i should get the radio times, see what other great shows are on the good ole fm.

Yea, Funny how this Jools guy started his Big Band year's after Setzer's and never even once mentioned him or gave him credit on his show! To my knowledge the BSO were never even invited on the programme.

The idea that Brian Setzer deserves any sort of credit for single-handedly bringing back Big Bands, or that anyone should give him any sort of "credit" just because they chose to record in that format, is a little silly. Setzer may have had great chart success (5 years in), but there were a whole slew of big bands out around 1993-94. Few, if any, were fronted by a guitarist, but the idea that Jools Holland, Colin James, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Royal Crown Revue, or anyone else aped Setzer's idea is ludicrous. That'd be like saying Brian should pay Harry Connick, Jr, or Joe Jackson some sort of tribute.
Jools, like Brian, has been sort of a musical archeologist through the years, forming a Jools Holland Big Band in 1987. Jools explored jump blues and boogie woogie piano in the early 90s - and I would think a big band would be something of a natural evolution for him.
After the first BSO album, Brian was doing something quite different anyway, resembling virtually nothing Jools Holland would put on his albums. Jools fronts his band with a keyboard (two, actually), takes a more Rhythm and Blues approach, (although he has done Ska and Country-flavored albums as well) uses guest vocalists, and relies almost exclusively on cover tunes that don't stray too mcuh from their original setting. Setzer, (at least after the first album) took a more rockin' big band approach, fronted with a guitar, and once in a while, inserted original compositions into his albums amid a healthy dose of loungy covers (Jump, Jive, and Wail, Mack the Knife, As Long As I'm Singin',) and re-worked rockabilly numbers. You'd never hear Jools doing something as blazing as Ghost Radio or Switchblade 327. Then again, you'll never hear a Jools Holland band do something as cheesy as the Jive Bunny-esque Gettin' In the Mood.
The BSO and the Small World Big Band have co-existed for years, with no apparent influence from one act to the other. If you don't count the BSO Christmas albums, Jools' Big Band has been rather prolific in comparison with the BSO in the gap between Vavoom! and Wolfgang's Big Night Out, releasing 7 studio albums. Having BBC staff arrangers at your disposal and a full-time big band through his TV show helped, I'm sure.
I do agree that Jools missed a great opportunity to get the BSO on his show, Later. I don't know if there was any sort of competitive jealousy or if it was just the fact that Brian quit touring the UK with the BSO a decade ago. (Was Later on back then?) Perhaps if Brian takes the BSO back to England during a time when the series is being filmed, Jools will extend an invite to have the BSO on his show.
This spring, Jools Holland takes the road with his Big Band. Opening for Jools: Dave Edmunds!
Perhaps Dave can put in a good word...
