| Well, just goes to show what a waste of time this thing was. Here's a list with some guys thoughts: Top 100 My A##Brian Setzer didn't make the list!!!!! What an absolute joke of the highest order. Just goes to show what a junk magazine this is. There's no way that he shouldn't be in the top 50. The list is such a joke, you may as well put me on the list!! Man I'm annoyed(can you tell?). Ahh, a place to vent my frustration. I feel much better now. René-a-pony (including his Zen) | |

| Brian never makes the list.. it probably also comes down to popularity in Australia - more people know about the Slash's and the Kurt Cobains (HAH!) than actual great guitarists.

| Yeah, it's incredible, isn't it? I remember this was discussed on the old Hoodoovoodoo-board when RS published this pathetic list a few years back. I know peolpe love to make all kinds of lists, but when did Rolling Stone Magazine turn into a guitar mag? This one has NO credibility...! OK, Jimi's on top - that's cool. But there are quite a few people who shouldn't even be on the list at all. Joan Jett? Jack White?!? Yes, they play guitars, but are they among the world's 100 greatest? And some of the really great players are missing (Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, Joe Pass, Hank Garland - and Brian Setzer - just to name a few...) Oh well, at least Cliff Gallup, Danny Gatton, Eddie Cochran and Scotty Moore made it to the list... Anders | |

Kid. I think this list was done in the US of A (not sure if you were getting at it being done here, if not, forgive me). Slash didn't make the list, I thought he would have been on it. This list would be hard to put together, but geez there are a lot of great guitarists missing and definitely a lot on the list that shouldn't be there. I'd love to know what the criteria was for this list. Zen-a-pony

| Whenever I'm sitting around in the airport waiting to get on a plane, I end up buying an issue of Rolling Stone. WHY, do you ask? Because I'm too cheap to get an iPod and load it up with music, and it's much too boring to read anything that requires my attention for more than 5 minutes to understand (especially in the chaotic, bustling airport terminal environment). So, with music on my mind, but too poor to actually listen to any, I end up buying something to pass the time. That, and maybe a Snickers or a Coke. The only thing that seems suitable practically jumps off the shelf into my hands, in those ragged little magazine shops. I think maybe I just buy them for the pictures! HAHA... although, I seem to remember the last one I actually purchased sporting a photo of Green Day on the cover... BOOO! Rolling Stone would be a lot cooler if it was all about the Rolling Stones! | |

That was actually the inspiration/reason for starting the magazine, as the title is a nod to the Rolling Stones, who have been featured predominantly in that magazine many times over the years. As for the content or quality of that magazine, other than occasional notes about the music scene, much of which we already know ahead of time, I can't remember a great article that I've really enjoyed reading from them since the interview with Capt. Teague and Capt. Jack (Richards & Depp) back when they were filming Pirates of the Caribbean 3. But, that's my opinion. The thing to keep in mind, too, is that most of the people who come up with these "best of" lists are not musicians, let alone guitar players. Their opinions have nothing to do with technical ability or musical knowledge, just whatever they happen to like listening too, hence Setzer, who isn't as mainstream as some of the others, Van Halen, Hendrix, etc. usually gets left off, although in my opinion he's ahead of them in terms of "best guitarist". In addition, I've also found that the quality of the mainstream guitar magazines has also declined over the past few years, and their lists, although a little better since the editors actually play guitar, are also less than perfect. I mean, one cover of Setzer in 30 yrs., gimme a break. Not to mention the fact that individually, myself, Nikko, and every other transcribing guitarist on this board has each transcribed more Setzer songs in the past couple of years than have been featured in the magazines for the past 3 decades. Anyway, sorry to be Rant N Rave 'ing to ye, but figured I'd add in my two cents here as well. Capt. Jones

I agree with everything you said - especially about the list-makers and their seemingly shoddy knowledge (maybe more of a lack of appreciation) about the musicians/guitar-playing themselves. I don't claim to be an expert, but I can appreciate the work of any guitar player just by listening, and I can say with confidence that putting someone like Kurt Cobain on a list above someone like Brian Setzer just ain't right. I like music from both artists, and have plenty in my collection. I just don't see why a list like that should be considered credible at all. I think Kid was saying earlier that it seems like more of a popularity list, and I mostly agree with that when I see these lists. I just can't choose a "best" guitarist; I have about 10-15 rolling around in my head that I could say are probably MY picks for the best... but I have maybe 4-5 favorites that I just can't narrow down. It must be because I simply can't ignore the all-around accomplishments and, most importantly, the rock'n'roll! How can you choose between all these guys? If anyone can possibly name an all-time best, what they're really saying is "___ is my favorite!" I think of Rolling Stone magazine the same way I think of MTV - it used to be cool, and now it's just a bastardized version of itself, with maybe a splash of interesting stuff here or there. Wait, I take it back - there's NOTHING cool about MTV anymore.
