| Hi Guys, RE: THE SETZER TRIBUTE GUITARI'm new to the forum and have really enjoyed readng your posts about brian, his guitars and gear, I'm also an endorser of Gretsch guitars shown on the Gretsch artist website as Carl Axon of Doctor & the Medics. Having worked extremely hard over the last 35 years touring and playing, ive been fortunate to have built up quite a collection of gear and am the proud owner of 3 Gretsch guitars. My first one was an SSU model that i purchased approx late 90's and shown here playing with the medics to a TV audience of 18 million. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acFC3LRzEUYThis guitar is about to go to a museum who are doing a year long exhibition on a local heroes type of thing in my home town of Market Harborough, Leics, UK in Aug 09. The next Gretsch i bought was a Ssvlo seen used here in another band that i play with from time to time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omHCkrT8bgYand a quick jam of Sleepwalk here on the same guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efkb1dET9METhe next & final Gretsch guitar i purchased was - THE SETZER TRIBUTE N0 26/59, So i'm going to do a you tube video showing all the differences & sounds of the Setzer SSU, Ssvlo & Tribute models to give anyone whos's interested an idea of what makes the Tribute model any different from all the others. So if it's of interest, look out for it as i'm going to film it this easter weekend . If you have any questions on any of these models, please dont hesitate to ask - Hope its of help Keep Rockin AKO

AKO being that we've only got one other guy on this forum with a Tribute model, it'd be cool to hear a review. The late 90s SSU were kinda crap compared to the FMIC SSLVO's ( i am a victim of a stock 99' SSU, but brought it to SSLVO standards sans lacquer and trestles). Cant beat an SSLVO with stick so to hear about a tribute in action comparison would rule. welcome dude

| Ah Thanks guys for making me welcome,
Well if there's anything you would really like to see or be shown in the video of either the ssu, sslvo or tribute models, please let me know asap before i film it and i'll include all the things thats of interest, Quite a few will be surprised with the outcome and i hope that the video will answer most, if not all of your questions.
One thing is surely clear when i get on stage with a Gretsch, in all the years i have been playing with Srats, les pauls & tele's, its without any doubt, its the Gretsch that has created the most interest, i take 2 guitars with me , a 2000 Gibson Flying V and the Gretsch SSlvo, and punters / sound techs are absolutely amazed by the shear power & sound of the Gretsch SSLVO and if we have a young band as a support, the kids almost laugh when i take it out the case cus it looks oldfashioned to their steve vai model or whatever, but its guaranteed that they'll come over and say wow what a sound, and they think ive got a whole effects rack or something and i just say, no its just a tuner !
Anyway, let me know what you'd like to see and i'll do it.
Happy Easter to you all

Chris Ok Chris. I'll make sure i cover the mud switch in the video and if there's anything else you wish to know or see, let me know. The video will be in 2 or 3 parts on You tube as im restricted to just 10mins per shot, so they'll be plenty of space to cover everything anyone wants to know, When the video is complete in a few days time, i'll post it on here, so you wont miss it Hope its of help to you regards Ako

| Thanks already for your efforts ako!! Another thing I'm interested in is if there is any sonic difference caused by the different choices of laquer. Poly vs. Nitro vs. worn Nitro. I can imagitne though that this will be very hard to notice via youtube's bad sound quality. Still thanks

Chris 10% more presence from a slight reduction of capacitance loading ( I replaced mine with a bypass pot) BTW..check the new thread See the video from the disc in the tribute guitar case.

Brett gretsch guits can rock man.. I use to love playing my tophat Emplexadors (vintage marshall clone) with the gretsch. I think a real marshall is best but sheeze they have to be loud. just played an old markII and died at its incredible tone! It takes some talent in itself to be able to control a gretsch nashville and a 412 at stage volume, bet it feels great to command that monster! Just sold my 412 cab to last month's bills..sniffle sniffle.. ako, come join us in the cave.

But for the most places i play with my Rockabilly friends it is to loud. I will try it again at my next outdoor gig.

| An Attenuator? I never tried one. Do you use it? I thought about this, but at the end i bought a new effect or an guitar or a speaker. But maybe it`s a good idea. I have to check... But i also love the sound of a fender Amp with a Gretsch Guitar. The clean sound is one of the best. Happy eastern... | |

Happy eastern... I've used a THD hotplate on and off for yrs, recorded with them (cool to turn your bassman ALL the way up and the hotplate is putting out 1 watt of super saturated vintage fender to your speaker) but I really would rather have the simple Airbrake version I heard a friend use at a pub with the bassman. This ultimate box is very versatile and at this last namm show I got to see it in action first hand but still the Bramhall performance made it appeal to me on that video. ITs the one to have I hear since most others like my THD have tendency to decrease your dynamic feel/ interaction between your amp and your guitar.. we gotta take this tech talk down to the cave

| Thanks for your kind comments, Yes im pleased with my sound, it took a whole week to try n get the sound i heard in my head, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omHCkrT8bgYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efkb1dET9METhe amp i use is a Marshall JCM2000 100w, i used to use a 50w version, which was great, but we did a large festival in Liverpool, UK a few years back and the amp supplied was a JCM 2000 100w, and it was so much warmer than the 50w, I was so impressed, i had to get one, so i did and thats been my sound for the last 6 years. This amp model has a Bass boost & Mid cut facility. Bass boost ON, Mid Cut ON, Presence 7, Treble 6, Mid 4, Gain 8. How i set it up may sound a lil strange to some, but it works for me, so here we go.. What i learned was that by setting the mid really low, creates a big sound, but you cant hear it ! So turn up, this then makes the valves work harder creating a warmer sound, Its the mid range most people hear, especially when they say its too loud, but because youve cut the mid, and its also low on the amp EQ , it enables you to crank it to volumes you wouldnt normally use, then for solo's I use a Boss EQ pedal set flat across the middle, but with the 3 mid buttons set slightly higher (in other words boosted), this when i press the pedal for a solo pushes the mid higher than the band and hey presto everyone can hear the mistake ! I mean Solo If you were to see my sound on an EQ it would have a great big smile on it, with the mid almost totally cut, this in conjunction with a Gretsch's resonance makes the whole sound massive If you are used to a lot of mid, my settings will freak you out, and you'll say, " I cant hear it", so turn up towards the dusty end of the vol knob, then you'll hear it and it'll be warmer cus the valves are being pushed, add a lil hall reverb and your ready to boogie. Hope this is of help to anyone, Please let me know what you think if you try it , and if you need any more help with it, dont hesitate to ask Now where' did i put that easter egg.. Ako | |
