what are some of the mic and mic pre set-ups you've used on your amps for recording or have for your own home studio set up?

I see that Setzer has used Royer Ribbon mics on his blonde bassman for live
recordings and studio, along with the old tube Neuman U47s.. I lust for such
mics. I've found a few articles from Mix magazine talking about how they use those
mics to pro tools and feed it to echoplex and back.

I had the pleasure of using a grouping of a few new=ish and vintage mics
on my last studio recording for my 2 bassman amps and cabs (the transitional blonde
has a vibroking cab using a celestion alnico blue and v30, the tonemaster cab had dual
v30s):

late 50s Shure Unidyne 55s dynamic (elvis), 70's Shure Unidyne 545s,
EV RE-20, Blue Woodpecker Ribbon and Blue baby bottle,
Neuman BCM 705 ( same capsule as TLM-103)

funny thing is I stuck to mostly the ol' 50s Shure 55s and the
545s which is a pre sm-57. really good vintage amp mics IMO..

For mic pre's I used an avalon 737 tube pre and Universal audio M-610 to Fostex 1" and
protools 002.

I've got an old 70's Shure Unidyne 545 out in the garage, haven't used it in ages, I'll have to dig it out and give it a run!

How do the new Shure Unidyne 55's compare with the old ones?

that Unidyne III 545 is the godfather of all SM-57s, I did all my vocals with it
and the Neumann BCM. we got such a great cone sound with it too.

the new 55s are really poop compared to the old guard but I wont say the old 55 unidyne
is good for anything live. It was one of those weird things where the engineer thought it looked cool (I restored it with the original red silk) and when we put it on the cab it really
liked the overdriven bassman and captured a sound that had an old record feel but kept the twang of that capital records thing Setzer gets somewhat.

btw.. I cant control my 55 for live sound, its a mess with feedback in the monitor..but..there is a guy who is putting the
capsule of the Shure SM-87 (my favored live mic) and beta 58 into the shells of these
reissue clunkers.. I want one!
